Any idea what a rem 788 44 mag mag is worth?

Rare as hens teeth now, just like the rifles. Sky's the limit. But I'm sure you will now be inundated with PM's looking to purchase it. ;)

44 mag

Hi, they are rare. I did own one but traded it of in a package deal to a wonderful CGN member.

Of course a rifle is only worth what someone is willing to pay; and how bad they want it. From all my 788 dealings my estimate of worth for a 788 in .44 mag is $425 (poor) to about $ 750.00 (excellent). That's not to say that a person  may pay even more for one if they are desparate.

In the new book of gun values it is stated that the rarest and highest priced 788's are the .44 mag and the 7mm-08. That may be true in the U.S. but up here (I've found) the hardest ones to get are the .44 mag, 30.30, .223 and the .243 carbine. My advice is that you buy it, it's worth it. Mine would shoot clover leaf patterns at 50 yards using cheap Winchester ammo.

Good luck, Arch:)

They were only made between 1967 and 1970. Gun value books are at least 2 years out of date, don't reflect local supply and demand and don't have anything to do with Canadian prices at all. The values in them are averages of nationwide U.S. values. Mind you, you have to start somewhere.
Haven't a clue what it'd be worth. Don't imagine Remington made many in .44 Mag though. You buying or selling?

Last one I saw was at a hardware store in Kendrick, Idaho. It was $69.95. Current value would depend on whether or not you view the Remington 788 as a collector's item. I do not. It was and is an econo-rifle. Nonetheless, there are people out there who would cheerfully part with five hundred bucks for that 70.00 rifle. Regards, Bill

Also made in 30-30.....................................Harold

I had a Rem 788 in .30-30 once. Very accurate rifle. Never did find a spare mag for it, though. I think the 788 .30-30 magazines are as scarce as the 788 .44 Mag magazines.

Old thread alert! :p

Bow Lake Firearms near Bancroft had both a 30-30 and 44mag 788 in stock a few years ago. I bought the 30-30 (nice cast bullet gun) and the 44 went somewhere else. Shop has been closed since last summer. The 788 in 30-30 was the rifle of choice for Cast Bullet Association postal competion a few years back. Same rifle in 308 was also popular. I've also got one in 222. They aren't pretty but they are accurate.

I've got a 788 carbine in 7mm-08 I've had for many years. One of the most accurate rifles I have ever owned.
