So I dragged home a rusty old rifle today ... What the heck is attached to this? I have not even started taking this apart. Upon looking at it some more Im scared its welded to the barrel. Worse comes to worse, this old girl can be good for some parts I imagine...








 
Looks a wee bit like a go faster conversion. Other than that, I don't know. Might be worth something, don't hacksaw it off yet :).

The trench warfare of WWI lead to some very interesting creations, I think you might have most of a periscope gun. Alas, I have nothing to back this up by way of real life experience. Just an educated guess. Hope this helps you to figure out what you've got here.
 
looks like maybe a mounted gun??? did the mount bolt action rifles to anything back in the day??? boat/bike/vehicle.... just a guess here :)
 
I think Juster has it. It looks like the "attachment" allows the rifle to be mounted coaxially with something. Either as a sub-calibre device, or perhaps to allow remote aiming.
 
looks like something you need to donate to the National War Museum for a big fat tax credit, cause its waaay to ugly to shoot.

It looks like a mount for use as a sub-calibre device. We used FN's with .22 sub-cal inserts which were mounted on our 105mm howitzers to punch 6" x 6" paper tanks at 25 meters.:)
 
It is an Ex-Canadian service rifle. M&D stamped on the butt (Militia and Defense) plus the serial number puts it in the batch of 40,000 MLEs purchased by Canada in 1896.

Wot is that extra hole towards the back of the fore arm adjacent to the butt socket? Wot's inside the hole? any threads in there?

Does the thingy-ma-jig clamp onto the barrel? Mount into the wood? ANY markings on it, Letters, numbers?

Pics of the barrel taken out of the wood is needed.
 
Ive oiled everything up at the moment. I was gonna let it all soak in before I went any further. The hole does not look threaded. I have no idea what its there for.... Im hoping someone out in the great wide internet can narrow it down .?????
 
the thingy-ma-jig has no stampings that I can see. I pulled the hand guard off and it looks like it loops under the barrel, I also see some green (copper shim? ... maybe just crud )

This is interesting! I was wondering if all artillery practice was done with full size rounds which would be really expensive. Anyone care to tell us more?:wave:
 
It is part of an electric training device ,there was a switch mounted on the side of the body activated by a rod mounted on the cocking piece. Similar to the old arcade shooting games and shown complete in the above pic.
