Any interest in a "modern cowboy" association?

Basically the same as the sass or any cowboy shooting, but bring what you got; any shotgun, any rifle, one each of revolver and a semi auto handgun, any years, any models in any calipers (not rimfire) and all the rules the same. I love cowboy action but cannot spend money on 4 new firearms, this would let people bring what they have. Holsters, dress codes the same.

Go shoot a three gun match and bring a bunch of your buddies you can all dress up in Cowboy gear.

I like this - nothing against SASS, I am a member and enjoyed Winter Range this year, and I think they have a great concept and execution for a family friendly shooting sport.

But the persona, costume etc. part of it doesn't do much for me, so if we could shoot similar matches (maybe with a bit more movement and greater variety of targets) but with modern pistol, rifle & shotgun and regular clothing that would be excellent.

I don't see why it needs to be called anything cowboy, let the SASS and similar clubs use that idea and use another name that doesn't indicate any association with cowboy.

"Action 3 Gun" (A3G) is not very imaginative but it is neutral and descriptive.

Come and and shoot a WRAS 3 gun match in Spruce Grove. We do almost exactly what you said. Modern three gun with movement and a variety of targets.
Check out some of our threads in the action shooting forum to see some video's.

No. There is no interest in a modern cowboy league. Part of the fun is using period correct firearms and the period correct costume. There is already many disciplines doing exactly what you want. ODPL, CQB, PPC Tactical. Also, if you want to come shoot a club match with your 9mm, your 870 and your pistol caliber rifle, we would probably let you shoot Wild Bunch at our club level. I have used my PX4 and 870 before.

Why would you let participants deviate significantly from SASS Wind Bunch rules and yet insist "There is no interest in a modern cowboy league." ?

None of the groups / disciplines you mention or any others I can think of typically shoot the type of rifle + handgun + shotgun stages seen in cowboy, and I think there could be a niche for this.

Because of the props used and the way the stages are organized SASS matches run very quickly, and because they are in many ways less demanding I suspect more people could participate.

In my opinion the costumes, replica six shooters & 1897s, etc. create a bit of a barrier to entry for proper SASS matches, but if you set the "cowboy" aspect of it aside and just call it "action 3 gun" or whatever you can have the benefits of props, stages etc. without corrupting SASS.

I agree whatever it is should not be called cowboy, we should leave that for SASS or something very similar so that those who enjoy the personae, costumes, replica / period firearms etc. can enjoy it.

I belong to SASS and enjoy every minute of it. But, in Canada, we should be thinking about building up our shooting community. So, no matter what discipline or style of shooting, it should be encouraged. If it takes off and get's good support, great. If not, these participants will undoubtedly look for something different, but still in the shooting community.

If it is a club match, call it anything you wanted but it sure doesn't sound like a cowboy match. For our non sanctioned club matches we have a "working cowboy" class where the shooter who only has 1 pistol can compete in, and reloads on the clock.

I don't quite get what is being asked. Bringing modern guns to a cowboy shoot? If you don't have certain guns to participate, there are always cowboys more than willing to lend guns to new shooters.

If you change the rules, you risk losing existing members. Not worth it IMHO, there is SASS for cowboys and 3 gun for the modern guns.

KK, I believe he's simply wanting to shoot in what we know of as modern 3 gun but didn't realize that there's already groups set up and doing this. At least that's what I THINK he was on about.

So people who want to shoot cowboy can come out and shoot with guns they are comfortable with until they can acquire the appropriate firearms. We don't want to exclude people.

What you are looking for already exists as I and many others have said.

HEY there ;there are rules and guns in all gun games. So find a game your guns will fit into. As to shooting wild bunch with a 870 remington .NO! Get with the program. The days of goofing around and haveing newbeies shoot what you brung are DEAD.
Been there tried that ! It just ticks of the regular paying customers.
As to growing the sport it is not for everbody ,so move onto one you can handle.
If you want to do a shoot what you brung shoot ,YOU step up design it and be accountable to the club for the results. I get tried of people who are not match directors putting words in there mouths.

Not at our club. We try to encourage folks who are curious to come out. Just because you said "NO", I think I must now bring out again my Remington 870 and shoot Wild Bunch with it (even though I have two 1897's), perhaps I will also use my 9mm Beretta again instead of one of my three 1911's. :welcome:

If anyone of our "regular paying customers" has a problem with it, I'll give them a quarter so they can call someone who cares. :HR:

Jeez, starting to sound like IPSC or something. Oh now I've done it, the IPSC guys are going to scream at me now. :(

yeah i think 3 gun is what you are looking for. i was thinking about using an sks, an old ass pump and a ww2 style 1911, just every now and again for #### and giggle.

no reason why you can use a lever rifle, lever or pump shotty and a super high tech polymer framed wonder 9!

Funny enough, but the whole "Playing Dess-up" aspect of the cowboy movie action shooters bunch, is pretty much the main thing that keeps me from bothering.

Dealing with the odd snotty crap from 'the paying customers' type folks is another. Life is too short to be stuck dealing with that.

A lot of people who shoot Cowboy Action have invested thousands of dollars in their hobby to shoot Cowboy matches, and to allow shooters who are not willing to invest any money, is a bit insulting. If your not equipped for cowboy action, there are many people who are more than willing to lend you the approprioate firearm. Otherwise, just look for a 3 gun match or better yet, at your local club, volunteer to put one on.

sounds like the existing 3 gun game is your thing then. Sometimes they use a long range rifle too which is nifty.
