Any interest in a "modern cowboy" association?

Come and and shoot a WRAS 3 gun match in Spruce Grove. We do almost exactly what you said. Modern three gun with movement and a variety of targets.
Check out some of our threads in the action shooting forum to see some video's.

Never think that the Cowboys are not a friendly group. They are and go out of their way to encourage and promote the shooting sports although most of all they do promote Cowboy Action games. Some also get into Black Powder cartridge and muzzle loading.

Cowboy dedicated range set ups are not really that compatible with other genres of the shooting sports. Unfortunately, most of the ammunition used by those who are shooting modern guns including semi auto handgun, necked case rifle, is damaging to the steel targets used by the Cowboys and the "mm" calibered handgun shooters use mostly jacketed ammo. For instance, it is pretty hard to load down the 30-06 with a lead bullet for shooting at a target that in Cowboy is typically 20 yards or less away. There are not many modern non-lever rifles (that I know of) that hold the 10 rounds needed for the stages. I believe that semi-auto mags are pinned at 5 are they not!

Yes it is daunting to come up with the $3500 - $4000 to get the dedicated guns and leather for CB Action. However, like all sports the action comes with a price. As many have suggested most groups have members who will let you borrow their guns for a few shoots. That was my experience, but one is expected to get their own within a reasonable time.

I was into shooting rifle, shotgun and hand gun in the 70's but dropped it all due to life circumstances. Then I was introduced to Cowboy action by a friend a couple of years ago and got the bug. The initial outlay including semi-deluxe reloading equipment pushed $6000 and getting back into shooting so far has hit the nine grand mark. The increase came from the desire to expand into Wild Bunch and heavy caliber longer range action.

My home Cowboy Action range is really built for and is dedicated to traditional Cowboy Action shooting only. The folks that have built the range have done it with sweat and the use of every method to come up with the money needed for the range. We have had problems with the odd person sneaking on to the range and the resulting damage that comes from the type of firearms and ammo used has been aggravating. Seeing bullet holes through our steel targets and mangled target stands does not encourage acceptance. Take a peek at www.valleyregulators.com for a glimpse at our range set up. Take particular notice of the "Building the Range" page to get an idea of just how much work has gone into the building of the facility. I have been a member for only two years and know that for every hour of actual shooting I have put in 10 or more into labour. Last fall I spent 8 full days limbing fallen trees and stacking lumber off the portable saw mill getting material for more shooting shelters. They are nearly completed now.

This ramble is only meant to give an idea of why we Cowboys, though friendly, do not encourage the use of equipment on our Cowboy Action Range that is really meant for other types of shooting.
