Any interest in shared equipment workspace?

I'm wondering if anyone is interested in the idea of setting up some equipment that could be shared.

It's pretty much guaranteed that at one point in time we all wished that we had a motorized case trimmer, or some other piece of equipment that we don't want to pay full retail value for or don't have space to store in our house.

I'm a member with the Edmonton New Technology Society, and we're in the process of renovating the garage, and there is an opportunity present to set up a small reloading station if there is enough interest. I was figuring I would buy something like the Lee anniversary kit, a case trimmer, a scale, some calipers, and get it set up in there. Just bring your own consumables(powder, primer, etc)
This could be a great opportunity for someone who wanted to try it out for the first time, or who only loads a few cartridges a year.

Is there any interest in this? Depending on some variables it could be operational by the summer. If there is enough interest we could get really fancy and get a progressive press.

A full membership is $750 per year or $75 per month, and gets you access to everything including the 3d printer, laser cutter, soldering station, and various hand tools and whatnot out in the garage. If you're interesting in just dropping by for a few days I'm sure an arrangement could be made.
Even on the high end for one month, that's $75 to get access to potentially a few thousand dollars of tools.

ENTS is open to the public on Tuesdays, you can drop by and we'll give you a tour. Well, I'll probably be working, but someone else can show you around.

So you get there with all your stuff and find 5 other guys ahead of you waiting.
I can't see it working out very well.

It works pretty good for everything else. There's always a drill available when I want one, there's always a saw.

Members have 24 hour access, which really does help reduce congestion, and it's not intended to be a production shop, it's more intended for giving the opportunity to do things that you might not otherwise be able to do. Not everyone has the space or cash to buy a table saw, a drill press, a lathe, and a soldering station, but exponetially more people can afford the monthly or yearly membership.

I'm not in the Edmonton area but if I was, I would gladly support this. Think of all the people that could be introduced to reloading (and likely shooting in general) with this.

The only question is - liability issues?

How big is the beer fridge?

Full. Standard size fridge. It's almost at the point of upgrading.

We had the general meeting yesterday discussing what needs to be upgraded and/or replaced. The garage is getting a major overhaul, and soon we'll have welding capabilities, possibly a mill, and a small foundry. If/when that gets up and running I'm going to see if we can arrange some knifesmithing classes. I'm also going to see if I can get some walnut blocks to make some rifle stocks.

That's a damn good idea and at $75/month pretty cheap. I recently got booted from my reloading space due to the arrival of our baby... apparently he needs the room more than I do.

Trying to find a workspace to rent is not cheap, hell even a small storage locker runs over $100/month; add to that the cost of the equipment you would have access to and this sounds like a deal and a half.

I haven't really discussed the liability with the Directors, but that is part of why I don't want to be storing components on site. That and to avoid issues of storage and/or having to have a big box labelled "Explosive" in a spot to terrify people.

I'm sure a lawyer could have a field day with the idea, so we'll have to get it figured out and/or maybe write up a waiver.

Someone bring's it home with them every night, or B.Y.O.C. (components)

Okay, making progress. Just picked up a Hornady Cam-Lock trimmer and case prep assistant. They'll be getting set up at some point in the near future. Once I get a confirmation on how much space is available to me I'll finalize the decision on how I want this stuff set up. I'm thinking it will be easiest to bolt the equipment to sections of board that fit into a slot on the workbench, so they can be swapped out and stored away when not in use.
