How do you finish the cut edge of a leather sheath or belt?

I am making a leather guard for a hatchet project and I use candle wax and lamp black to treat the edges. That's fine for a sheath or something like that but is there a better method for something like a belt?

Edge Kote, you can get it at Tandy in various colors.

Best edge is obtained by burnishing the edges by slightly dampening them and rubbing them vigorously with a hard tool like a piece of deer antler. Then apply black ink from a wide tip felt marker.

Actually, I would use an EDGE beveler, it rounds and smooths the edge, then burnish, then if required dye it with edge kote or another deeply penetrating dye.
