Any left eye dominant shooters that trained right eye?

I am right handed, and left eye dominant. I started this hobby about four years ago. When I bought my first rifle, I did some research on this as well. I was shooting long distance, so everything was through a magnified optic. From the beginning, I began to shoot with both eyes open. The right eye quickly and easily focussed on the target. Not squinting, helped to avoid fatigue, and helped with flinch. I have spoke with a few people who recommended covering my left eye, or even rotating my flip up lens cover to block my left eye. I found it more comfortable to just look down range with my left eye.

I purchased my first pistol a few months ago. I had to slow things down, to see where I would be more comfortable. I use my right eye to establish the sight picture. I just picked up my first AR, and use my right eye for both iron sights, and optics. Again, keeping both eyes open.

Two of my kids are left handed and left eye dominant. They shoot my guns, and really do not have too many problems. I think I would make some different decisions if I was to shoot as a lefty. A shotgun with bottom ejection, and a left side bolt action would be a must. The AR I just purchased now has full ambidextrous controls. The only gun that gives the boys a bit of grief, is the SR-22. It ejects the spent casings to the side and back a bit, so they have to just make sure they wear a shirt with a tight neck/collar.

I am left eye dominant, right handed. Trust me when I say the correct route is to train your right eye unless it has some impairment that can not be overcome.

As a righty shooting lefty, shot guns and rifle were fine, but when it came to pistols I was still using my right hand and just twisting my right wrist to align the sights. This causes tones of trouble for your grip and trigger squeeze I found, so this past winter I dry fire trained religiously on all my platforms right hand right eye. As of this spring I am 99% ambi and can shoot long guns off either shoulder equally well, and niether shoulder is preferred anymore, just habit from training.

Since sold my Tavor Lefty bolt and bought other bullpups that I couldn't have used comfortably as a lefty. :)

I'm Left Eye Dominant and did everything as a lefty when I was a baby, then my crazy parents 'changed me' to right handed when I was young (they told me). Therefore, I'm right handed with everything except kicking a soccer ball. So, I can shoot both ways, but seeing as I was changed to right handed for almost everything since I was a baby, I now use my Right Eye for sighting as holding a rifle or pistol feels natural on the right side. It doesn't see as well as the left, but the difference isn't that large.

With red dots, my astigmatism plays tricks with both eyes so it doesn't make a difference. If I keep both eyes open, it's reduced a little bit and my right eye isn't at much of a disadvantage.

Unsure if this helps someone, but I'm left eye dominant and shoot right handed using my weaker eye. I'm used to it now.

Nice to know others have the same problem. I'm a lefty but don't own any lefty guns. Right eye dominant though, so training the hand is much easier for me then the eye. Been learning right handed tasks most of my life. My let eye is poorer, but corrective lenses can compensate i hope. Some semi autos cycle alot of gas back. Some day i'll have a lefty gun(s). Thanks all for sharing.

been thinking of doing it

how painful is it during recovery?

It took a month of very slight discomfort and some touch up, but now i have the vision of a 20 year old, best investment i made for myself, i can shoot all kind of scopes, red dots and for open sights, i use a little pair of glasses of 1.5X strenght... JP.

Unfortunately no. My right eye blurs very quickly while I can look down the sights with my left all day long. Same goes with photography. Instead of fighting it, I shoot left handed and intermittently use my left hand for writing, mousing etc. it still doesn't feel totally effortless but made a difference.

I'm left eye dominant and right handed.

I shoot pistol right handed and turn my head slightly to the right, with my chin pointing to the hollow of my right shoulder. Works for me.

I shoot rifle and shotgun left handed though. Never had a problem, nor does brass from a semi rifle or shells from a shotgun ever hit me. Working a bolt quickly (like the Enfield mad minute) requires a little creativity, but it can be done.

I'm exactly the same, but since I started off as a righty shooter, I am fully ambidextrous and have even trained my eye enough to shoot right handed without having my face completely over the stock.

I'll still favor shooting weapons with a stock left handed purely for comfort reasons, although Id o believe that after 8 years of shooting left handed with rifles has made my left index's trigger pull better than my right one.
