Well I am thinking about getting into IPSC this comming summer and I am left handed just woundering what would be a good pistol to start with I know the best think would be to try different ones till I found one that fit me good but there are no shops in my area that sell pistols and im not going to get to go to my range and talk with outhers because this is its last weeked befor winter and I only joined last week. There must be some pistols that are more lefty frendly out there

I'm ambi, but shoot right.

However, the gun I'd immediately recommend to a true southpaw is my own STI GP6. The safety, mag release, and slide stop are mirrored equally on both sides.

While several guns have reversable mag releases, the GP6 actually works from both sides without changes. If you choose the optional big button, of course you pick the side it's dressed on.
 
What Division are you thinking of going into?
I'm a lefty, and my list below is what I've used or what I think would work reasonably well. I don't believe there are too many pistols that are truely 'lefty friendly', and if they are, they may or may not be well suited to the racing environment that is the IPSC sport. It may be in your best interest to learn the typical right handed controls, and as always, what may suit me may not suit you.

Production: (in no particular order)

Glock 17 (what I use) Not particularly lefty friendly, but with the stock extended controls, one can use them effectively.
S&W M&P (Have Used) Magazine release can be switched to the right, and the slide release is ambi.
CZ SP-01 Shadow (still thinking about using)
GP-6

Standard and Open:

Pretty much an STI/SVI 2011 platform
 
if you go open with a S*I platform, they will come with ambi safety and you can buy a left had mag releases for them. However, ejection will still be to the right. there is one true left hand gun out there but i can not remember if it is a BUL or a Walther. perhaps someone can help here.
 
actually the standard setup, mag release on left ejection port on the right, is left handed. Browning was a lefty ;)

Being a lefty with a the mag release on the left side of the gun you would use your trigger finger to push the button which means you don't have to worry about having a finger on the trigger during a reload.

Me too, I now run an STI Edge, with the extended mag release turned through 180 degrees it's easy to hit with your trigger finger and dump the mag. I know masterclass lefties who run tiny mag buttons and have no problems at all.

To be honest if you shoot a semi you get used to it from the start so you never really notice it.

I do have a Storm with the mag release switched so I can hit it with my thumb - it's weird and I'm considering switching it back to 'right handed'. Also make other peoples lives easier when they borrow the gun :)

I'd reccomend not worrying about it and spending the $$ you would on this on either a better gun to start or more ammo....

If you are shooting in Production then everyone shoots minor so it doesn't matter. If you are shooting in Standard then yes, you are shooting minor against people shooting major.

depending on how you shoot, it could make a 6-10% swing in your score. If you shoot all A's,...it matters not. 10 C's minor is a loss of 20 points,...whereas 10 C's in standard shooting major is a loss of 10 points. All things being equal, shooting major has its advantage. However, shooting major, guns usually have more recoil compared to 9mm minor (125-135pf)
 
Buy a Colt Government Model or clone. They come in .45, 38 super and 9mm. I shoot left and everyone makes parts and accessories for these guns so that you can. I have the Colt Series 70's and Gold Cup Series 70's for many years, they work.

i shouldve known this first and go minor right ahead, im a bullseye shooter :)

Randal made a 1911 pattern "Portsider" a mirror image 1911 Government, Also Dlask Arms in Vancouver makes a left side Government model 1911 and mags, Expensive but truly Unique, if Standard is your choice in Division.
