any love for the 783?

The plastic stock sucks, I dreamed the barrel channel as best I could, then threw it in the garbage.
The MDT was the best and only upgrade it needed.
 
Had one in 450 BM but it had a massive gouge on the feed rampant wouldn’t feed rounds. Too bad, it was cool with the shield red dot and tactical bolt knob
 
I've had 2 783's, both in 308 and like the platform for its' strength & accuracy potential. The plastic stock units need some creative bedding to stiffen up the fore end along with packing the hollow buttstock with sound damping foam so they be quieter in the woods. The walnut stocked rifles are nicely put together and easy to bed if needed.

The triggers are decent for many shooters and aftermarket ones ain't hard to get. The Brewer type fitting of the barrels make for easy swaps and better striker springs are doable enough by shortening a Wolff Model 700 Rem spring a tad & polishing the cut end for smooth operation. The 783's are dandy for custom builds
if desired.

This is a nice set SS. JP.

I have kept the grandaddy of the 783. A Marlin XLV-7 in 308, this is the same rifle as the 783, i did not know that when i bought the 16.5 inch 783. I am happy to have both generation. JP.

My 783 shoots pretty damn close to MOA with surplus 308. I was shocked, was expecting about 2MOA. Good value if you ask me, what more could you want? Good looks? Fit and finish? yeah doesn't really have those.
 
OP, they are a cheap rifle, but the quality is not bad for the price and the rifles I've shot, were anywhere from 1moa to 2moa shooters with good factory ammo.

Some of the cheaper factory ammo didn't shoot nearly as well.

I would think a hand loader could find a load that would be very consistently accurate.

I don't particularly like their triggers, but I'm spoiled and a bit anal about triggers.
 
I don't know if it's worth something to you but know that my 783 16.5" 308 win shoots 3 shots group in 3"-4" @ 300yds with tulammo 168gr SP repetitively. My scope was a 5-20x44 Nikon monarch.
 
I do like mine, it's a 22-250. Accurate and decent trigger, the synthetic stock is poor to average and i didn't even fire it with the scope that came with it. Prefer it over the Axis.
 
The 783 is a great platform.
Out of the box it delivers everything customers expect.
Not happy with OFM, no problem, lots of kit to adapt it to what you need from the aftermarket- all able to be done in your basement.
Only gripe I have is the fugly bolt shroud; can’t someone make a decent looking replacement already...
 
I have 2. A 223 16.5hb i bought to convert to a 20tac. Made the mistake of shooting it as a 223 once i dropped it into a mdt chassis. 3 vmax cloverleafed at 100yards. I kept it as is but swapped the bushnell scope for a nightforce. I just assembled another in 308 with a 24" hb that will become a 338federal. It also sits in an mdt chassis
 
My 783 is a compact in .243. It shoots consistently at 3/4 moa with cheap loads. Just don't buy the package with the scope. Its a waste of money. The scope is a no-name piece of junk and the rings are pure excrement. The scope doesn't even have a marking for what country its made in. No one wants to claim that it was made in their country.
But with a half-decent scope and some half-decent rings it shoots.
Two of my daughters have taken a deer each with it.

As for the person who posted that he can get used 700's cheaper... where is that?!? Used 700's are going for a LOT more than 783's from what I've seen.
