I had a Baikal Makarov in 9mm Mak
I sold it a ways back but I will say that I put almost 1000 rounds through it and the thing literally never had a single issue during all those range trips.
The design is perfect. Simple, rugged, extremely reliable, very accurate (I was blown away by the accuracy of it actually as I was expecting TT33 results, was using bulk Norc ammo so with good handloads it would be a tack driver for a pistol)
Easy to handle, small and compact, has modern safeties (even a hammer decock ala Sig226 which is also the trigger locking/hammer blocking safety lever).
Very easy to strip and clean (there's a crazy video on the net of a dude fully stripping it with one hand!)
It's an ingenious design.
The only flaws are the following:
The mag release is a bit of a pain but with practice it's not that bad to change mags fast.
The cartridge is limited in power (essentially a .380 Auto cartridge. But it's a military pistol. If you switched to a pistol in that aspect it's because you were at very close range anyhow.
The ultra ### Canadian extended length barrels look goofy.
And it's getting harder to find 9x18 Mak in Canada these days for some reason.
If you really want to get the most out of the gun, get the $20 Hogue rubber wrap around grip. Makes it way more comfortable to shoot and thus easier to shoot it more accurately! Best bang for buck improvement you can do to it. Oh and get the self cocking Spetznas holster as well from Interammo for $40, it's beyond awesome!
