Another noob question but as a follow up to my AR .22 thread...
Are there any .223 / 5.56 non restricted AR's out there available in Canada land?
tks.
As others have said, if by "AR" you mean a gun derived from the AR-15, they are all restricted by definition.
However if by "AR" you mean any true "assault rifle" then there are a variety that are non restricted and many threads about this topic:
-- Swiss Arms Classic Green / PE90
-- XCR
-- ACR
-- SL8
-- Tavor
... bunch more, but for the most part you can't trade parts between the AR-15 platform and any of the above, except in a few cases things like magazines. Variants of Swiss Arms, SL8, and Tavor are actually used by several Western militaries.
Technically there are other AR lines that are non-restricted, I don't think guns derived from AR-10 are restricted. It's specifically AR-15. Is an AR-10 an AR? Most people mean AR-15 when they say AR.
AR-10s are restricted as well....and none of the guns you listed are assault rifles. AR15s aren't even assault rifles.

Do you need full auto to be an assault rifle?
Why not? Do you need full auto to be an assault rifle? Is there an official definition somewhere?

Assault rifles are typically characterized by being full-auto capable with large magazines attached. Usually also have a butt stock.
