You never hear about trapping in NS unless some dog gets caught in a snare. I was wondering if we had NS trappers on CGN who could inform us of the trapping culture in NS, IE how many trappers, ratio of parttime (check traps in the morning before going to the real job) compared to those who make a good part of their living off it during the season, land owners response to your request to trap their land, etc.

I've trapped for the last four years or so. There's quite a few trappers active in the province, we're just stealthy lol.

There is a trappers association here, I'm not sure how many total in the province, but would hazard a guess that there aren't many full timers, we just don't have the populations IMO.

I don't run a big line, but most landowners I've spoken to are pretty receptive. You can pick up permission pretty quick by trapping nuisance beavers.

It's a fun hobby, a good reason to be out in the woods all winter and something different to do with the kids.

I've only ever gotten into snaring rabbits in Fall River but I'd be keen to learn a bit more about it as I'd like to get more serious in 2014.

I'm taking my Trappers course in 2 weeks, I'm 29. I have bee trapping with my dad for years. And he had been trapping since the early 50's. There are more trappers then you think around the province.

I haven't been trapping since I left University almost 30 years ago but in High School I was a trapper's assistant in Cape Breton. We covered pretty much all of the island. Great memories.

I trapped all through highschool them moved away, then haven't laid any steel since. Now i'm back i'll be going at it again this fall. Impossible to make a living off it unless you are single and have no bills. My stepfather is as close to a fulltime trapper as there is now (30+ sets at any given time) and makes 2000 on a good year. Still loads of fur around but most use it as a hobby and to keep the tradition alive

Been over 20 years for me but if you check the NS Hunting Site there is a section there and some excellent guys which are more than willing to answer any questions you have and at least two are heavily involved in every aspect including training and growing their members.
"Cumbtrapper" is one handle that come to mind and really knows his stuff.

A couple of my friends do it just for fun(legally). This year they caught
Half a dozen raccoons
Mink don't know how many
I think 1 Martin can't remember
Half a dozen coyotes
3 nice bobcats
They didn't start till January cuz they fished till Xmas
I know of another guy who trapped 87 coyotes in the valley plus a bunch of other animals. He might make a little money doing it

I tried to take the at-home part of the course but the website wouldn't let me register without first having a PAL and Wildlife card first. Is this course open to anyone? When is it? Might need a carpool if I can make it. I just want to take the course for information.

I didnot think it was on line and you should not need a pal. Last year you could take the home study version but you must also attend the two day work shop and pass a written test after completion. Probally the same for 2013

A buddy of mine is in the New Germany area and traps pretty seriously.

Like everything else in N.S. you try to keep your head down and out of the news as the squeaky wheel anti's seem to run the show here.

I heard about the guy who trapped 87 coyotes, didn't know it was in the valley - insane!

What are the details of this course?
I may be interested.
Thanks.
