Any of you guys swap out a larger scope because

you just use too much magnification, and find a full scope just too large for shorter rifles?

I was reading that snipers in the past used Mildots and 10 power so I decided to remove my 6-24 and try a 3.5 - 10 power and just leave it on 10 power.

While I miss zooming in on the paper I kind of like the smaller scope now.

What have you guys found for shooting out to a max of 400-500 yards, and my Savage is a .223 as I use it on varmints and paper.

Also have QD rings so I can swap quickly to my all metal irons if need be.

 
Gitt'in yer arsre awll layzy and dragg'in yer eye down to such level will achieve diddly sqwat.
My poor shooting eye has convinced me to bigger optics......not worhty.
I've been shrinking power to concentrate on focusing putting the x hairs centered
on the target, rather than focusing on the bulls-eye.
Furr don't give bulls-eye dawts.

it can be sait in meters but not for minimun.

that rule of thumb is what you are seeing at 100m is time 1x.

so at 250m you will see like the target is at 100m if the power is at 2.5 if at 5x then only 50 meters if you were using your eyes only.

at target at 100m with a time 10x will be like at 10 meters with using the power of your eyes.

i remember in my old days of instruction that if we were not able to hit the half body target at 600m with that lovely little scope we had to shoot at 300 meters for the rest of the day the same kind of target with the eyes only and we hit both equally, just a matter of practise and shooting time.

those days were the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s ...


today is a different story ....
 
With eye sight dimming as I age , most of my fixed scopes are now 3x9's on my hunting rifles except on my DG or brush guns........Harold
 
I don't own a scope of more than 10 power, but then I don't care about tiny paper groups at long range. For big game I have never "needed" more than 9 or 10x. Even for shooting tiny varmints like gophers poking heads out of holes at 300 yards, I find 9x enough. Others have other preferences.
 
They is no such thing as to much magnification, i put my scope on 5X when needed but if i need 25X, it's there... JP.
 
I like magnification but not if it comes with a big heavy objective that overwhelms my hunting gun, which most do.
I really like the 24-40mm objective scopes. Here is a 338 win that works well with this 2.5-10x24 NXS

 
Even though these old peepers are not as good as they once were, I have the excellent
Leupold 6x42 on several of my hunting rifles.

This is good enough for shots on game as far as I care to shoot at any animal.

I also use the 3.5-10x40 Leupold a fair bit. But I usually carry it hunting set at around 6x.

For varmints at longer range, 6.5-20x40 is a better choice for me. Targets? fixed 24x or 36x fits the bill.

Not necessarily a power limit on my rifles but most certainly a size limit. I don't own a scope with an objective larger than 42 MM I think it is. I use 3-9X40 as my standard "one scope does all". Use them on most of my hunting rifles and rimfires, do have several 3.5-10s but they are not physically bigger than the 3-9s and a couple 4-12s which again are the same size.
I have found I do like having more magnification as the eyes get older, but not at the expense of some outlandishly huge, bulky and heavy scope.
 
Well a couple years back I was checking my guns out just before hunting season and a faithful 1/2 " load I'd been using for years went into 1.5 inches at 100 yards.Good enough for hunting BG but amazing...... when I swapped the 4x Leupold out to a 3x9x40 ,I was cutting 1/2" again! If you can't see it clearly ,you can't hit it...a fixed 6X is a good compromise........Harold
 
That's why I love my Sightron STAC 2.5-17.5-56. Ya it's a big ass scope and on the heavy side. But when I put it on 2.5 and turn on the centre dot illumination. It turns into a red dot scope. Both eyes open its really good in close. Was nice to have when coyote hunting and they would pop up at 100 yards.Also I love the moa 3 reticle for longer shots. But, ya it is a heavy pig. But I also head out to some private land and shoot steal at 500, 600. And I'm still learning the ins and outs of long range shooting. And the glass is insanely good. So for me now. I find it flipping the perfect scope.
 
I usually only run a top end 10-12x scope. When I first tried hunting I had a 6.5-20 and I lost an animal at 30 yards because I couldn't pick it up quickly through the scope. I would rather have too little magnification than too much for hunting...
 
I used to run a 6-24x50 PST on my .223, dedicated target/ long range varmint rifle. I sold it and picked up a 4-16x40, I found I never really needed to go that high and the mirage can be brutal when it does. Even now I rarely hit 16x at 750 yrds. As for my hunting rifle it wears a 2-8 x32 and I'm more than comfortable to 600 yards with that. Shooting prone of course.
