no doubt original. according to Neal and Jinks book " Smith and Wesson 1857 -1945... all the changes of the 1905 38 HE M&P could be had in either blue or nickel

Resurrecting an old thread. The gun in question is a 1905 1st change. Serial number 98### puts it between the 73### and the 142### of the first and second change models. Mfg date 1906-1909. The serial numbers overlapped, with the difference being the 2nd change has two dowels in the star extractor - this one does not. They were offered in both blue and nickel, round or square butt.
