I'd like to join IPSC next year and I currently own only a Ruger 22/45 Hunter. Can I realistically compete with just one gun for all 3 divisions? Of the guns that can participate in Production and Standard, I like the CZ-75B (feels good in the hand) and I'm thinking about the SR9 (haven't tried it yet). Could I realistically compete in Modified or Standard with a Production gun? One other thing, I've never spectated at an IPSC match before, only seen stuff on Youtube.

Theoretically, yes you could but you would be severally hampered in standard and open division. Production division is very specific about what gun you can have, there is an actual list. Everyone shoots minor in production. Now you could get a 40 cal gun and shot minor loads out of it in production and major loads out of it in standard division, however in production you first shot must be double action. There are one or two guns out there where you can change them from double action to single action or where you can do a manual drop on the hammer and have double action or apply the safety for single action. However, when you get too modified or open that is a completely different game.

The next problem you face is that in an IPSC match you may only shot in one division.

I know what you're thinking Ninja, but IMO you'll be better to pick a division and try the sport first.

If you feel you want to move around theres always lots of deals on used guns and equipment...

Any recommendations as to which division would be best to start with?

depends, how big is your budget? :shotgun:

seriously through, i am old fashion and i recomend that everyone starts out by buying a 45 1911 single stack or if you want to be fancy a 40 but they only have 9 round mags.

if you want to start off low budget then definately production class.

if you own a gun by all means use it. once you get started you may want to change. :welcome:

any gun that fits the rules for production will satisfy all the other divisions... you will be at a severe disadvantage only in Open (in Canada rest of the world include Modified). Remember it's not the gun that makes a champion it's the shooter... so find the gun you like and have at it.

If you want to shoot Production, Standard and Modified (hint if you shoot modified at a match you'll win... guaranteed... no one else except a few in Canada shoot modified so you'll get 100% of that division.. I'm trying to get more people to come over to the dark side and get it recognized as a division for next world shoot).... then find a gun on the Production list and again have at it as you progress you'll settle into a division you like best.

You know Walt they do sell 10 round mags for 1911 single stacks

right now, I am using a tanfoglio stock2 9mm for production,...I like the grip and low bore height. I can actually save money on mag pouches and holster by using an almost indentical tanfoglio (.40) with magwell and SA trigger in standard.

I'm looking to shoot 9mm because it's cheaper and I can afford to practice more. I'm not too worried about competing in Minor because I'll be aiming for the A target anyways. One thing that concerns me is the triggers available for Production and what's used in other divisions. I like the single action on my Ruger. I'm not terribly thrilled about shooting traditional double-action so I'm looking to getting a striker-type DA. I'd be cool if Para made a 9mm 1911 with LDA. I think that would satisfy my needs but since that doesn't exist...

Thanks Dragoon. I looked into that model and the seller made an error. That model is a traditional single action and I can't use it for Production.

ideally try a bunch of guns, find something which fits you, which feels good, which you like, and which you can afford (both gun and ammo), get that, and then shoot whichever division that gun is best suited for.

If that turns out to the a DA/SA 9mm CZ-75 (or some other SA/DA like that), you'll be shooting in production, most likely. if you fall in love with a SA trigger, but don't want optics on your gun, you'll be in Std. if you love the speed of a compensated gun with an optical sight, you'll end up in Open/modified (and, buy the way, these are in the increasing order of cost)...

Up to you.. you're the one who'll be shooting it!
