Any Ontario turkeys yet?

Out again today. No gobbles, and no toms anywhere.

They are there, they just are not showing themselves and nt gobbling. Seems to happen for a few days every year. I'm going to give the birds a few days before hitting them up again. We'll see what happens.

10/4 on that. I missed that post. I just thought I was being called a criminal.

Thnx for the heads up!

QUOTE= captonion; "I got two...Not sure what they weighed...Pretty big beards but didn't measure them. Too late now they got thown in the bush with the guts, and stuff."

ummmm technically you are a criminal, you MUST report to the MNR, the length of beard and the length of the spur within 24 hrs of shooting a turkey. So, seeing as you threw them in the bush.....:HR:

I've been out four times so far this season, Gobbling has been pretty quiet, sightings down, activity at a minimum. I think its because it's been so cold and wet. Out of the few gobblers I have seen I was only able to get one to respond to calls. Managed to call him in for my hunting partner who shot him at about 30 yards. Decent bird just shy of 22 pounds, 9 1/2 inch beard spurs just less than an inch. It's certainly not at all like it was last season so far which hopefully is due to the weather.... Headin' back out tomorrow hoping the big thunder chickens start for fire up soon !!!! My new turkey gun hasn't even had a chance to get pointed yet..

Got a nice one this morning! 22 lbs, 9 1/2" beard, 1 1/4" spurs.

went out on Saturday morning. Saw 2 Toms fly down from their roost and took off running as we were walking through the forest, tried to track them no luck. Drove by some property that we didn't have permission for, tried to call them from the side of the road for the hell of it, they weren't having it lol (they know they were in a safe spot). Going out this week to try our luck again. This is my first year so really don't expect much but hey you never know, quite frankly i'm more geared up for deer season cuz a 20 lb turkey don't fill the freezer as much as a 100+ lb. deer.

the only thing you learn in the turkey course is dont carry a bird out of the bush like this or some redneck idiot will shoot you in the head lol

Actually there was quite a bit of factual information on that course when I attended (first year). And we all know that "Sherlock" posed for that picture, THEN carried his bird out of the bush...........:D

hey Doug...long no see you here:wave:...just got back from a pelee island turkey hunt..my lesson learned was:redface:...
them turkeys were a lot smarter then me:mad:

OK, here is my take on turkey hunting after quite a few years at it:

You get up in the middle of the night to go stumbling around in the dark, with sharp sticks poking you in the eyes, then you sit down shivering in the damp and the cold waiting for the sun to come up, then you are tormented by black flies crawling into your ears and nose while you cannot move for fear of spooking a turkey, all the while every muscle in your butt and legs are screaming at you to get up and move around, but you CAN'T. And all this trying to outwit a bird with a brain the size of a pea, and he generally outwits you.

Did I miss anything? :p

I took the Course a few years back and found it fairly good, The guys from Ofah didnt' just teach us about safety but we're interested in the new hunters being successful and gave out a lot of tips.....That being said its been long enough that Ill have to buy a video or something because I dont' remember most of it. Havent' had chance to hunt them yet.....the only turkeys up around these parts are putting up Orange Election signs :D

Shot a day apart.....I guess nobody has heard of properly hung and aged fowl.

actually I didn't think people did that with turkeys... ducks and geese yes, but not upland...

And I apologize, as I did read it as you shot both in the same day, and didnt call it in. An assumption based on other peoples posts (#23, and another one on another forum)

So does hanging the bird change the taste? and how long do you hang it for?

:)

Have been out twice now and have seen everything but toms. Deer and hens around, only ever heard one gobble in the distance. As mentioned in here, has been quite wet and cold maybe toms sticking to their hens more closely this year - I might wait for a few warm days since it worked for me last time.
