Any point in owning rifles in both 7mm-08 and .308 Win?

I'm not really worried about confusing ammo. The thread seems to be getting derailed, but still good discussion. :)

More concerned with ballistic and other reasons to own both calibers or not.

Any reason why?

Because I can...If you're looking for a reason to buy more than 1 or 2 rifles, you won't find it. We do it because we can, and enjoy playing with different calibres, and to have a backup rifle if something goes bad...

One thing the .308 can do is throw 200gr bullets, that the 7mm08 can't. Excellent for close range hunting...

If you want to own many rifles, never own a 308. Since the 308 Winchester is considered to be the Work Horse of Cartridges, owning it causes many dilemmas.
You will no longer "need" a lesser cartridge. The tried and true .270 is mute.
The .308 gives you a short action with plenty of power for anything in Canada. Able to use Mil surplus ammo. What if any advantages does the 7mm08 give you? non! Critters killed with a 7mm08 are still dead with a .308.

Now in order to help out others that have made a mistake purchasing a 7mm08 I suggest you give me an email and I will gladly relinquish your useless rifles instead of destruction at $10.00 each only because I'm a nice understanding guy.

Or am I just going to wind up always taking the wrong ammo along with me? :D

:D
I own 6 rifles & a combination O/U rifle shotgun in .308 Win.

I shoot mostly factory ammo on hunting trips because the quality of factory ammo has improved greatly in the past few years & I had to give up my big workshop when I moved south to a smaller hacienda in the burbs.

Most of my guns like Remington Core-Lokt ammo believe it or not Ripley and the proliferation of mounted heads & horns on my walls will attest to their effectiveness.

Don't own a 7mm-08 because the .308 Win. can do everything the 7mm-08 can do & more because there is a lot better choice of factory ammo with a wider range of bullet weights & types in 308 Win. caliber.

Also, if you forget your ammo box just about every Crappy Tire or hardware store in Bugtustle, Northern Ontario half-way up the azzhole of Canada will have a box of '08s, '03s, or ot sixes' kicking around on a shelf under a layer of dust but I defy you to find one box of 7mm-08 factory ammo in any of these little hamlets that civilization forgot about........this can save your hunt if the fickle finger of fate points at you & bad shyt happens.

Not really. You could hunt all your life with the .223 and the .375H&H and fill the freezer every year. The rest are because you can...

Does this necessitate handloading? I also think that practice would be severely curtailed if .22 LR were out of the running. Most of us can't afford to shoot even the white box .223 in significant volume.

I don't have either, but I wouldn't be afraid to own either (or both). Alot more ammo choices for the .308, especially in the smaller stores.

Myself, I would probably get the 308 first, given a choice. But if I found a good deal on a 7mm-08, I would take it home.

The issue of mixing up the ammo could be quite serious. you just have to be careful. I've heard of people taking a colored sharpie and making a quick swipe across the bottom of their cartridges just to make it quite obvious which one is which. But nothing beats common sense.

You could buy a lot of ammo/components for the $$ you would have tied up in 4 or 5 more rifles with decent scopes...:)

True, but one would also need to invest spare time and practice into loading rather than shooting or practicing some other arcane hobbies. And then one winds up with the same cartridges loaded at all manner of different velocities anyhow.

Zero sum game? :D

I've set up 7mm-08 fpr silhouette because so many in the game said a .308 would beat you up and a .260 would do just fine. I have an M305, I guess if I did my silhouette rifle in .308 it would have meant 1 less set of dies.

I have 3 MOD sevens, 308, 7mm 08, 243, And I NEVER mix my ammo. My two boys hunt with me and i keep a close watch on the ammo there useing.

One of the great things about the .375 is the huge range of use with a single load. I've spanned from 15 pound to 3500 pounds with the TSX. You don't need another bullet unless you want to take on elephant, or maybe hippo.

Of course you need both!!

Of course there's a point...and a valid one at that. You need both!

And, I might add...you need every caliber in between!;)
