just thinking I want a 300wm bbl. going on a savage 110. I already have 22-250, 270, 7mm, 30/06 bbls, and thinkin of getting 300wm and practicing Longer distances. have no problems swapping bbls, and it would get a brake as well. I'm sure someone is going to suggest getting a 308, but why? or why not? all ammo will be hand loaded. any reason not to get 300wm? just factory takeoff for now, then match later when I get better.
I know 30/06 and 7mm will be close enough, but want one anyway at the moment.

have had one for 10 years. It is my go-to gun for punching anything beyond 300 yards. (mainly paper at that distance for me). It gives it that extra oomph that makes the difference between bottoming out your scope adjustments and having a bit extra left "to dial up". That extra 200+ fps really adds up at 800+ yards and beyond with the VLD bullets.

300WM is a great caliber. For the cost of a little extra powder you get a lot more performance over a 308.

I have a 300WM bbl off my Savage 110 BA. PM me if your interested.

Ballistics, cost and recoil. A 6.5 cartridge like 260 Remington has less wind drift and drop out to 1000yds, less recoil, cheaper components, longer barrel life. You'll shoot it more then a 300WM.

If this is just for punching paper and you are not worried about ft-lbs of energy, why not go lighter?

It will also round out your line-up of calibers nicely.

Just my 2 cents.

mainly for paper, although it may see some hunting, but only out to about 350 yards. also want a factory takeoff for now, so that eliminates some calibers.

The ONLY reason I didn't go to the 300 WM, was that Lapua doesn't make brass for that round. It may sound trivial but I have my own personal preferences.

Go smoke another one bro.

Run the numbers yourself bro. 185gr target hybrid at 2900fps versus 140gr hybrid at 2830fps. Oh, you got me. The 6.5 drops a whopping 2 more inches. For a round using half the powder, not bad I'd say. Less wind drift though. All my other points that you edited out still stand. All other things being equal, I'd pick a caliber I can afford to shoot 300 rounds a month then 200.

I shoot or have shot both 300wm and 260rem and I think your velocity numbers are off.

With 300wm and a 208gr amax I got 2945 and with my 260rem and a 139gr scenar I'm getting 2775.

So I can see why were getting such different numbers.

Also good luck getting a 260 to 1500+ yards super sonic...

I wouldn't worry about it Kona, people always try to justify their stuff by using bogus numbers for what they don't like.

I don't know why you think I don't "like" the 300WM. The OP asked for reasons not to get one, I have pointed out that you can get similar performance out of a smaller, cheaper cartridge.

A good question for the OP is how often he plans to shoot past 1000yards.....

Fair enough. I just did a quick Google search and averaged what I saw for the magnum. For the 260 I just took what I get for my 6.5x47 and added 50fps for the extra powder capacity.

A friend of mine in the USAMTU who coaches the 300WM team says the basis to be on the team is the ability to hold the rifle up for the course of fire, sighters plus 20 on score. If you are not big and brawn you will not make the team. This is coat and sling stuff of course, br is different.
