any reason NOT to use a Beretta 92 orr Girsan Regard for IDPA?

I had both of these in my mitts today and I really like the way they fit my hand, and the weight of them. I do shoot IDPA and my current pistol does me just fine in SSP.

I don't want to end up with a firearm that is not right for the job in some debilitating way.

if you watch the very first "idpa nationals" you will see bill wilson and all of the higher ups shooting the whole match to prove the point that the beretta is a great gun to be used in the sport.... granted i think that was in 2005 and since then striker fired pistols have dominated SSP.
 
I figured it would be good, but I wasn't sure if there was some obscure technical thing etc that would make it non-competitive. I have done some auto sports and some cars, as good as they are, have been made uncompetitive(or SUPER competitive) due to rules.

I was using a Beretta 92 in IDPA since 2009 (had it for 15 years though so lots of trigger time with it); but last year switched to revolver. Still bring the '92 out on occasion.

Everyone tells me the Beretta is not as competitive as say the M&Ps or the CZ's; and my times generally are not good enough to rate that assessment - but that's nothing to do with the gun ;)

All I can tell you, is it's fun with the Beretta and I'm in the game. From what everyone else figures, I might not make the top with the Beretta these days, but someone else can better explain the mechanical limitations.

BTW you get more style points with the '92. Lots of Lethal Weapon jokes, and I can wear a Hawaiian shirt without shame.
 
I use mine for ipsc, I know I'm not a top dog, so I just go out and have fun with it. Unless. Ur a pro who shoots 800 rnds a week to be the best, and ownes a 2000 dollar pistol, just get what you want and enjoy.
 
Scott, its just a class thing. If I leave it cocked in the holster, I have to shoot in enhanced service pistol. If I decock it I get to shoot in stock service pistol.

Same as other pistols with decockers.

Odd tho, that with striker fired pistols(Glock, Ruger SR9/40, Styer etc) those can shoot in ssp, but be cocked in the holster.

Beretta is missing factory parts availability. Thats why i run CZ. I started with a 92FS, and if they would stille produce the brigadier elite ll with spare parts available i'd be running that.

No tricked out race guns in IDPA. Are you thinking IPSC?

I think the biggest detractor for me with using a 92 would be the safety's location.

I really hope you are not talking about placing a cocked 92 in your holster. You can't apply safety with it cocked. Or are you talking about CZ,1911?
 
I use a 92 in IPSC. The brutal DA first trigger pull is a big disadvantage. The sights are also not great. Beyond that I think the 92 is as good as any other gun. It seems to me that unless you are an elite competitor in the top ranks, your performance is determined by your skill, not the gun.
 
I haven't shot enhanced, but it doesn't take much. Not "race" guns at all. Just not stock anymore.

I haven't put a cocked hammer fired pistol in my holster yet, just my Ruger SR9. I have seen many pistols with their hammers back in holsters tho.

Basically SSP is for DA/SA and striker fired. ESP is SA (and you are allowed checkering etc)

No optics at all in IDPA. It's philosophy is based on concealed carry and using what you would carry. Not buying what makes you faster (kinda like IPSC)
 
To alleviate the first shot DA trigger pull, all you need is a Wolff trigger spring (this is actually optional) & a D-mainspring (makes the big difference). Did both to mine; drops the first pull drastically and it's incredibly simple to do. Also completely legal, even under the 2013 Rule Book.
