Any reason to have both 7mm-08 and .308?

Seems like a redundancy: If you have a .308 target rifle and a hunting rifle in .308, is there any reason to keep a 7mm-08 hunting rifle around?
 
NO it's not redundant. - It's always better to have more rifles. The 7mm has a better b.c. and s.d. Which is good for distance and hunting applications. Besides it is always fun to develop another load if you roll your own. IMHO
 
Yes!!!

More is good.

We can say any rifle between .243 and 500 Nitro will harvest most game in Canada during normal hunting situations.So, all each person needs is a 30/30. ;)

Besides, the 7-08 has a higher cool factor.
 
I think that If I only had a 308 , or a couple of them in 308 .... and I had no other rifles ------ I don't think what I would purchase next would be 7mm-08.....

But I can think of lots of reasons to indeed keep the 7mm-08 around

The 308 is at the bottom of "all around" good for most anything with the proper projectile and at shorter range. The 7-08 is at the top of "recoil sensitive/young/small shooter". Perfect deer gun, and with larger projectile even barely ok for Moose.

Really there is a lot of overlap. A 140 7-08, and a 150 308 could do anything the other can. I ate a lot of Moose shot from a old Model 99 308 with 150 gr as a kid.
 
The best reason I could find to having a caliber that is very close to one I own is that I can't live without THAT exact rifle. To me it wouldn't be so much a cartridge consideration than a rifle consideration; say you found the rifle of your dreams, or price range, and its right in front of you, ready to go out the door to a new home, does the difference between a 7-08 and a 308 make that much of a difference to you at the time?
 
Nothing wrong with redundancy. Never know if one got dropped, damaged, etc, you would have a reliable backup. I always bring two on moose hunts for just that very reason. It makes sense to have two of the same caliber logistically, but I prefer variety.
 
I have the whole .308 family in several platforms... love to shoot them all... there is no such thing as firearm redundancy, if you enjoy shooting them...

I have both in sporter and target rifles - I mainly shoot the 308, but the 7-08 outperforms it at target and long range shooting. Put a 150 gr SMK under a good load of R15 and its 1000yd performance is very impressive. For hunting, my gal has dropped 2 moose with the 7-08 with 140 NAB, both didn't go 10yds, and both were pass-thru's.
In shooting at wet phone books, the 7-08 out penetrated the 308 by 10-15% using the same bullet.

The 7-08 is mislabelled as a sissy cartridge, but from first hand experience that statement simply isn't true. Recoils less, hits just as hard, drops less... whats not to like?
