So as the title suggests, i've recently come to find that my hands are rather small. I am looking to buy my first pistol this summer, however after handling a few of my friends' guns at the range i've found that my thumb generally has trouble reaching the controls on most glocks and sig models.

I fully intend to go to a store and properly handle some more different models and choose from there, but what are there anything that you think i should keep an eye out for in particular that i'm likely to fit? 9mm preferred but i'm open to other calibers as well.

In case anyone wanted specifics: With my fingers fully spread from the center of the wrist to tip of my index finger is ~17.6 cm, middle finger is ~18 cm, tip of my thumb is ~13.2 cm.

Tokarev TT-33 7.62x25 they are from anywhere 199 to 280 depending where you go and the ammo is dirt cheap. I had one but got rid of it as it was to small for my mitts.

in 9mm the HiPower, M&P, and G19. Look for any pistols that have interchangeable grips or single stacked.

you might want to check out some 22 pistols. they tend to have smaller grips then 9mms

Unless I'm mistaken about where you're measuring from, our hands are pretty much the same size. (I'd consider them to be medium, but I digress).

Anyway,, I shoot a Gen 4 Glock 17, and find it to be very comfortable with any of the backstraps, though I tend to prefer the small. I think it's pretty normal to have to rotate the pistol a little to drop the magazine. Magpul Dynamic Handgun video teaches you to use your left index finger to rotate the pistol to reach the mag release.

My point being, don't write off 'standard-size' handguns. Maybe we'll never shoot Desert Eagles comfortably, but most other pistols are within reason.

I think i have the smallest hands on the planet. I found the Ruger SR9 to fit my hand the best. The M&P and Glock 17 Gen 4 both felt good as well.

SR9 is the smallest in a fullsize pistol hands down. You should stop here and go play with one.

Another option is a Sig 239 Tactical which is a compact single stack, and is probably the single slimmest grip for a 9mm pistol on the market right now.

Lastly the Boberg Arms that are on preorders is likely to be the smallest available once they hit the market but it is a sub compact carry pistol in Double Action only.

CZ is a pretty good feeling in the hand, but the slide release, and trigger(Double Action) are a reach for short fingers, and will present issues.

Try a sig p226 or norinco np22 and you'll quickly find that the mag release and slide release are perfectly placed! If getting a cz, try the shadow as it has an extended slide release

I think there is a compact version of the Beretta 92 that would suit you (not sure that you can get it in Canada though). Carrie-Anne Moss used it in the second Matrix movie, I think.

If you have short fingers then the DA/SA guns likely will give you problems rg. CZ & clones. Beretta and Sig 226 as well as the Glock with it's 2x4 style of grip. The M&P with it's Small grip panel probably is the best buy for accuracy, reliability and avordability. Go with the FS for plinking and playing the games or the PRO version. The 1911 style of guns can be had with a short trigger or you can have a short trigger installed. For inexpensive a Norinco 5" with a short trigger installed would serve you well.

As Canuck44 says, any DA/SA gun is going to give you issues with the long DA pull. My inexpert recommendations:

1911 with short trigger, thin grips (and bushings) with super scoop cutout.

CZ 75 SAO with thin grips.

M&P 9/40 with small grip strap.

Any 22 pistol from Ruger, Browning, or Norinco.

My wife has small hands, she's tried all the handguns I've played with.
She didn't like anything double stack- it opened her grip too much, thin worked, length of grip didn't make a huge difference but width was a show stopper.
So I showed her a Colt Combat Elite 1911 I had planned on flipping, in 0.2 seconds she decided it was hers...
And while it fits ok I know I can make it fit better with ultra thin grips, a low safety and a short trigger- it has the flat backstrap already.
I've been pondering building her a STI Match Master (9-open) with a single stack lower with the above additions- maybe a slide mounted dot or maybe with a racker and a gas pedal..
