I was wondering if I could pick your brains for some suggestions on a holster for a Glock 17. Looking for an active retention system along the lines of a SERPA holster and some mag holders.

Any recommendations? Anything to stay away from?

Thanks for your time.

I got one of those cheap plastic Itac holsters and it works great! I paid less than $30 for it. Did my black badge and one IDPA club shoot with it.

Serpa holsers are fantastic. Used one on both of my tours. They are pretty durable.

Why are you looking for active retention though?

This will be my first holster purchase so I have zero experience with either active or passive rentention and although I don't plan on doing backflips at the range I figured active retention would be the safer way to go. Should I be considering otherwise?

For glocks I love my blackhawk sepa, level 2 on the hip, level 3 drop leg tactical with mag holders on each side.
If you want a weapon light, look at a safarie land drop leg or a raven concealment.
That's my 2 cents

A Raven offers all the retention that you will want. That would be my first choice.

I would avoid the Serpa if for no other reason than that they are getting banned at lots of training facilities and by lots of big name trainers, so if you go get yourself some pro instruction, there's a decent chance you'd have to replace it anyway.

There are other reasons I would avoid it as well, although I do think the degree to which they are seen to be ticking time bombs has been exaggerated. Mainly, they're cheap, poorly built, and have effectively placed the "landing gear down" lever next to the "shut engines off mid-flight" lever. Can you work around it? Sure. Would I rather fly a plane with those levers on opposite sides of the cockpit? For obvious reasons, yes.

If you MUST have L2 retention, go with the Safariland ALS. Much better quality holster.

Otherwise there are a lot of companies doing the kydex pancake thing. Raven as mentioned above, plus a nearly endless list...Kaluban Cloak, Atomic Dog, Cane and Derby, the list just goes on and on now. Peters Spada. I think DeSantis makes one now. Personal Security Systems. I'm just naming them as they pop in to my head. There are a zillion makers. I use the Atomic Dog stuff myself...very heavy duty, nice stuff.

Also Praetor Defense is making a lot of waves right now...for a G17 with no light, pretty good way to go.

Thanks for the feed back misanthropist. I've found a couple writings online as well regarding some ND's caused by the SERPA overseas....

I'll take a look at the ones you mentioned. Thanks for the info!

Any opinions on FOBUS brand holsters?

TDC is right, they're pretty weak. I have some Fobus mag holders...lying on the floor in a closet in the spare room.

I have nice kydex ones on my belt!

Incidentally if you are looking for mag pouches for your G17, allow me to point you toward Kytex Shooting Gear. There are more expensive options, and there are fancier options, but there aren't any options that work any better. He ships to Canada in a USPS box, no brokerage, very fast. Highly recommended.

Thanks for that lead misanthropist. I think I’ll be going with a couple of those mag pouches from Kytex Shooting Gear (btw is this the gentleman from Texas? Just want to make sure I’m on the right site) and a Raven holster as Wendell suggested.

Thanks for the great info everyone. I very much appreciate your time.

I have a Safariland 518 Paddle Holster and love it.

That is the guy...I also highly recommend his flashlight holster.

I wear mine every day as I have a job which requires a lot of flashlight action, and I have a ton of tools so I don't look like a knob with a flashlight on a pair of dockers. Anyway, I think I'm around month 5 of flashlight EDC with his holster and it takes a beating every day...still works like the day it arrived.

Mag pouches from Kytex Shooting Gear just arrived and they are amazingly awesome. Pics to follow. (once I learn how to post pics on here!)

True.

I only use Safariland now. As much modularity options as the Blackhawk products but much better overall. You will protect your weapon a lot more also in them. Water, sand, snow etc...
I did used the Serpa in the past. Well they are ok but nothing more. I also do not like the protection they offer to the weapon. A Lot of the firearm is exposed and the lock system can get dirty and will not function properly. I can also freeze up and stay locked. Like everything out there it depends on the usage.

More expensive and maybe a little overkill for IPSC or similar practices but I highly recommend Safariland stuff.

IDPA banned the serpa usage in the US I think.

See this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDpxVG9XFJc Military channel guy. Very informative.

Depends on what you plan to do.

Cheers.
