Looking for a cheap non-restricted camp gun to mess around with, something light enough to hike with, cheap enough not to worry about scratches. I like the idea of the mare's leg, but hard to find cheap ones. Lot's of short shotguns, but would prefer a rifle.

Is there any way to legally get something like an Axis in 308 with a barrel just long enough to clear the stock? I'm having a hard time finding relevant information online. I know cutting it shorter than 18.5" (I think) would be illegal, and a factory made short barrelled would be legal, but I'm not seeing any offerings...

Could I buy an Axis with a second barrel and get a gunsmith to shorten it and re crown it? Or is that still considered modifying a rifle? It has to be 100% legal and NR

Are there any other options?

Stevens made some 13" barreled .22 Magnums, model 305F... cheaper to shoot and will take care of camp chores.

A replacement barrel would have to be made in the short length. Most any competent 'smith could do this starting with a blank. Trick is to find a lower priced blank for a project like this - you don't want to buy a custom $400 blank. The machining alone is going to run up the cost. Thread, fit, chamber, contour, finish, etc.
You could ask the dealers who sell prefits if they could get something made for you.

A trapper style, 16" barrel lever action in .357mag or .30-30 would be a fun camp gun.
Ruger Ranch American 16" in .223 or 7.62X39 is pretty handy.

I think you'd be happy with a 16" barrel and won't notice the extra 3.5" length over say a 12.5" barrel.

Slightly better velocity, bit less blast and more options.

What do you consider cheap?

The Rossi ranch hands used to be around for less then $700 new and sometimes sold used for around $500 but prices have crept up and they are no longer sold new as far as I know.... another $100 or so for a full length stock and your looking at around $600-$800 used.

The Ruger PCC 9mm takedown would be a good fun camp gun as well.

That could work, but hoping for something in centerfire just in case i do have do deal with a bear or coyotes

Hoping to keep it around $400, so yeah might have to go the 16" route, or shotgun (DA Outlaw, Lazer 14" SS 20ga). I wish someone made a O/U in 20ga with 12" barrel!:shotgun:

I shortened and refinished an older bolt action 12ga (13" LOP, 18.75" barrel), but it's not much fun to shoot because it's so light I guess, and still a tad long... And shotgun ammo is heavy to carry (I hike and carry all my gear to where i camp)

I've been looking for an inexpensive short barrel to add to a Savage rifle as well. Numrich Gun Parts sells Savage Striker barrels (essentially factory Savage barrels approximately 12" in length) for about $100 USD. I've tried to get a short .308 barrel but they won't ship to Canada and they are not interested in dealing with a third party like IRUNGUNS or Prophet River. I'm not willing to spend $400+ on a high quality barrel. I would be content with a factory quality barrel.

Ouch

Very cool! How much?

My favorite carbine truck rifle is a mosin m38 ( or m44), with a 20 inch barrel still has lots of power and accuracy up to 150 yards. I paid 225 for a second one two years ago as a spare truck gun. Took a moose with it during hunting season.

Coyotes can be cleanly dispatched with the WMR... and cap a bear in the melon and it won't be feeling good... I would not recommend it for hunting bears, but for camp protection it would work fine.

All you will need for little investment

Shorty prefits for a number of actions are no problem at all. PM or email to discuss.

The 783 in 16.5" might be my best bet, and i do reload the 6.5 CM

Too bad they dropped that line. Mine was deadly inside 100 yds. Norinco had a similar short rifle at the time.

Those are pretty cool, i would probably pull the trigger on a 22 wsm if i could find one used at a decent price.

I do see some 783 on CGN with longer barrels, what's the law in Canada for shortening a bolt action barrel, I see conflicting info on the web. 18.5"? 18"? Or doesn't matter with OAL over 26"? OR Smith can shorten it to 16.5" if the rifle is available in a 16.5"? So confusing

Thanks for all the good info folks!
