I was wonder if any one has a Springfield M1A and what do they think of it?
I have a chance to get one for a good price and want to know if theres any problems with them.

Please I only want to hear first hand about problems not "my bubbys sisters friends father has a crappy one"lol

I owned one briefly about 15 years ago. It worked flawless. I sold it to afford university.

I'll definitly own anotherone when I save up some cash.

The Springfield M1As aren't really a bad rifle, just WAAAY overpriced for what you get these days.

The recievers are cast along with many other parts, and some parts are contracted out (read off-shore).

They also have a lifetime warranty, but you haveto send them the complete rifle if you have any problems, and this is a problem in itself if you live up here in Canada.

There have been issues with their reciever geometry inregards to fitting scope mounts in the past, as well as a bolt recall a few years back.

I have owned several M1A/M14 type rifles, and if I got a REALLY SMOKING deal on a Springfield, I wouldn't mind picking one up.

SKBY.

I've owned 3 Springfield Armory cast recievered rifles. Nice finish. Back then in the 1980's they were hovering around $ 1000 while Colt SP1's could be had brand new at Lever's in Vancouver for $ 600.

I took my wife (dating girlfriend back then) for our first date to the Indian Reserve's dump to shoot bottle with this NM M1A. That was a tack driver. At least she knew what she was getting into before she married me.

Yes, M1A's are no longer the decent value they used to be. Back then most of the parts were USGI. Today you will be lucky if even a few minor parts are USGI, all the major parts are sub-contracted (read: off shore).

Cheers,
Barney

I agree with the posts above. I have 4 Springers and 4 Chinese and 1 Fed Ordnance. For the money you are better off with a Norinco .
Springfields are okay and I have some that have given no problems while others have given problems.
I have had O problems with my Polytechs .
I havent shot the Fed yet so I can'tsay for sure on that one yet .
M305 would be a better bang for your $ in my opinion over the SA .I would still buy either a Chinese,FED ord or Springfield again if I get a good deal on one again.
This is just my opinion .

I can't help but crack a laugh when I read this! I just can't hold back, gotta rib ya Barney... :D Either you're really something special, or the girl hadn't been outside of the house in years... :D :p Wish my dates were so cheap and fun, beats the hell outta spending $100 on overpriced drinks at a club... If you can pull that off, you've got it all figured out my friend. :D

Added by Hungry: At the risk of hijacking this thread, my wife and I met while I took a teaching job up in Northern AB. She was the outpost nurse. We got along very well. There was not much to do except get out and shoot and I happened to have my NM M1A (cost me about $ 1200 in 1984). So I loaded up some 125 gr. plinking loads and off we went to the local dump. An abundance of glass targets greeted us and I introduced her to Springfield Armory. What a great way to date. Hey, at least she knew what she was getting into if she hooked up with me. Then I showed her my K2's. I was sponsored by K2 Skiis back then. I told her that I've got nothing to hide. I'm obsessed with shooting and skiing, there was no disguising that pre-occupation. Tomorrow (22 years now) she is my sniper partner for the ORA 3 Gun match up a Milcun Ranges. What a neat way to use a Springer.... picking up girls..... LOL
