Any stories about the 6.5x55?

Your premise is flawed.
I'm OK with that. My wife reminds of my flaws all the time. :)

Certainly not "sickening" (odd choice of words, perhaps an attempt at whimsy?). :)
Not whimsy ........ just trolling. :)

I'm sure the 6.5x55 is a very good cartridge. There are positives and negatives for the whole lot I listed as well as the 6.5. Most do about the same in a real world hunting situation.

The belt buckle that I won this February in Phoenix shooting the SASS Nationals, in the "Wild Bunch" Pre 1912 Military Bolt Action Rifle side match. I was using a 1900 manufactured Mauser M1896 Rifle with a disk that said the bore was a #2. I was using 150 grain Lead Round Nose Gas Checked bullets with Unique and took 3rd place. I'm going back this winter with a "new" Model 1896 Rifle with a #1 bore, hoping to do better.

I've never shot at more than paper with it, but that very interesting link posted above http://www.ballisticstudies.com/Knowledgebase/6.5x55.html does not suggest it is the be-all and end-all of game cartridges by any means. A fine and historic cartridge of course.

Unrecovered bullets; that's a bit of a catch-22 isn't it? Translated that means a lot of energy is lost with the vanishing bullet that ideally should be imparted to the animal, no?

Shot placement still seems to be about the only universal truth.

That's certainly true. Doesn't mean folks can't have favourites. :d

Uhmmm...... no.

OK, so I'm all for having a fave cartridge esp if it's one that's a bit different and ammo is not found at Wal-Mart or CDN Tire. My fave is the 257Roberts. Big deal! Who cares what I like? :)

Saying that, after reading the proceeding sickening 6.5x55 love fest, I still don't think there anything more magical about it than any other std cartridge of similar velocity with std C&C bullets fired in similar rifles. Wondering aloud what can it do that a .260, 7/08, 7x57, 270, 280, 308, 30/06, 303, 8x57 can't do? Do tell!

Well nowzs..........I sirrstainly dew.
Butt, let's me tellzs-ya........................yah taint a Fudd lesson ya gartzs a Blondie hiding in yer clothezitt oar under yer mattrist.

..........cuss I like pawpkorn.........................

I have owned 3 different 6.5x55's (a CG80 target rifle, a Husqvarna 164o, and a Heym SR-30). It is a mild recoiling cartridge and I found it to be a good whitetail cartridge. I personally do use a slightly more powerful cartridge for most of my hunting as I am not particularly recoil sensitive so there is little downside to using a larger calibre for me. This year I will hunt with a couple of 30-06's (a Mauser M12 and a Brno ZG47), as well as my .375 H&H (because it is a beautiful rifle and fun to shoot).

If you find a 6.5x55 that you like go for it, it's a great cartridge.

Are you meaning to tell me that any old standard cartridge with a plain jane cup and core bullet would be equally ideal for hunting deer and black bear ?

I agree completely, these days too many people are drinking the magnum cartridge, premium bullet Koolaid, and think a standard cartridge has to be somehow special to work well (like the magical 280AI for instance). Common sense has become so rare that its practically a super power.

Using h t t p://gundata.org/ballistic-calculator/ I'm not seeing any differences in flight path that I would consider meaningful between the 308 and the 6.5x55

It seems at most an inch difference in flight path at 300 yard zero. This is disappointing to me since I'd been expecting more.

Anyone want to weigh in on that?

The difference is quite small out to 300, but when you get out further the sleeker 6.5 bullets start to show more advantage.

At 500 yards, the difference is on the order of 5-6", depending on which bullet you are using. [I'm comparing 140 grain, 264 bullet to 165 grain 308 bullet]

Interestingly, the 6.5 retains slightly more energy at 500 than does the 308. Moot point, since well placed bullets kill, not energy figures, lol.

Regards, Dave.
