Any Successful Ontario turkey hunts yet?

My buddy and I are in Walkerton. Smacked 2 nice toms this morning with Luke from Wingfeather. We have some more nice ones lined up for tomorrow morn. I'll put up pics later

Got a nice little tom this morning at 8:15. 20.5lbs 8" beard and 7/8" spurs. The birds were suprisingly quiet this morning. Never heard any hens and the gobblers shut up around 7.

I got bored/cold and went for a walk, spooked a couple of hens then returned to my blind. Once I got back I noticed a jake and a tom in the field headed towards my blind. I couldn't sneak back in so I had to sit on the fenceline and quietly/slowly remove my gun from it's case. Took him at 35-40 yards through a bit of brush. Not an ideal shot but it he looked like he was about to dissapear into the bush so I took it.

Loads of turkeys dying all over the place, between me and my friends (including diemaco) we killed 6 turkeys in two days.

I killed a BIG jake this morning 6 inch beard and 18lbs. The ideal meat bird.
Got a gobbler coming to a field in the afternoons so I am going to sleep in tomorrow and try and kill him.

I finally got to get out this morning, hunted some crown land. Got set up by 5:00 am (no decoys) and waited. Heard two Tom's gobble and thought this is gonna be good. Now you gotta understand I have been hunting turkey for last 4 years and have eaten tag soup for 3, my calling is at best poor so I try my best. Anyway I start calling and right away I get gobble's back, so I shut up. Then I hear what all turkey hunters can't compete with the hen. She is clucking and yelping up a storm, so I start calling back trying to do my best to imatate here, she is beliving it! I look to my right and her they come two hens and one Tom. Hens come right in..I mean I could reach out and grab them by the neck. I am waiting for the Tom to come closer and it never happened. The hen's got tired of looking for the hen and went back to where the Tom was waiting and they walked away. I didnt get another visit, called it a day at 12pm. I will try again next weekend. Still a Successful hunt!

Got my first turkey yesterday after a few years in the field
Can't wait to take the pops for his first hunt next week.

My first attempt ever in the field, hunting anything, went out with a friend and spooked a hen out of the trees at about 5:30, procedded to set up and call, never so much as heard a gobble. Did a quiet walk down, ran into another hunter sitting closer to the field and packed it in, rather dissapointing but looking forward to the next day.

Great job guys... I only hunted the afternoon and I saw 7 birds today... 4 hens a jake and two toms... Unfortunately the toms never gave a shot... But the woods are busy here!

I went out this morning as well. I did hear a few gobbles (and 5 shots in the near distance), but not nearly as active as last year. The one tom I did see hung up about 300yrds out and eventually buggered off into the woods. A little later a hen was checking out my decoys and stuck around for a while, apparently she didn't like my hen decoy as she looked to be trying to pick a fight with it. Also saw a coyote trot by at about 100yrds, but never came any closer. Still fun to go out, will try one of these evenings or next saturday for sure.

Took the morning off instead of heading to my favorite clearing... watched the kids and did the dad thing.... big mistake.... I woudl have been there when this guy came by.... and yes, before the CGN game wardens ask the feeder has been empty for a month....

My little cousin, Tony Fields from South Mountain, Ontario shot this tom yesterday. It weighed 18 1/2 pounds, 3/4" spurs, 9 1/2 beard. Taken with a Winchester 12 gauge. Congrats Tony, I'm proud of ya!

We smacked 2 more Toms yesterday, but had to work pretty hard to ger them. I'll post up the pics and stories once we're back home.

The toms around here seem to have stopped gobbling once they leave the roost. Makes it a little more difficult to find them. I'm hoping that with the weather warming up later this week they will start making some more noise.

I watched a bunch of hens and a big tom come up the field 300 yards yesterday heading straight for me along the fence line. The tom would stop and fan and strut but didn't gobble the entire time. They disappeared behind a knob in the field and I lost track of them. Oh well, they have been seen in the same place everyday for a week so I'm going to head out there to setup on Tuesday.

I set up at 5:30 in the morning on a bird I had roosted the night before.... I waited to let the woods settle down a bit from my entrance and started a series of calls on my box call..... I heard a distant gobble but not from the bird I had roosted.... too far... I sat for two hours calling without even so much as a hen response... figuring it must be the wind and the cold weather I decided to do a little bit of run and gun hunting....

I walked back to the edges of the cedar swamp and made a few yelps and purrs on my box call... nothing.... I continued walking and stopping to call every 100 yards or so.... As I got along a ridgeline in the hardwoods I made a call and this time I got an answer... not the one I wanted though... a hen response... Figuring the hen would make a good natural decoy I settled in behind a deadfall and began to call hoping a gobbler was in the area.... I hadn't been calling for more than 5 minutes off and on when a big gobble rang out... just over the ridge that was 30 yards away!.... I settled in on the gun and once again kicked myself in the ass for not being able to work a mouth call....

I made a few purrs on the box and hoped it was enough to entice the gobbler over the crest of the ridge.... sure enough, another BIG gobble and I could hear him open his fan for the strut.... I purred once more and another gobble... "come on show yourself" I thought.... suddenly as if on cue I saw that big red and blue head with red snood and waddles crest the ridge..... I centered the red dot and waited what seemed like ten minutes (3 seconds) for him to take one more step and expose the kill zone..... with that one step in place I pulled the trigger and down he went... As I stood up to keep an eye on him his harem of 3 hens ran back down the ridge and into the gully....

Not the biggest bird in the forest but very nice and now that I have one in the freezer it's time to go trophy hunting.... This guy tipped the scales at 18.5 pounds and had a 5 inch beard and 3/4 inch spurrs.....

WOW... that is a HUGE JAKE... Of the dozens of JAKES that I have seen, I have never heard of one with a five inch beard and 3/4" spurs! Every JAKE that I have ever seen had bumps or nubs for spurs and little 2-3" beards that stick straight out... congrats on the record JAKE! :)

LOL.... well.. it's almost a Tom... if you look at the tail feathers you can see the black band is almost complete..... and the spurrs struck me as odd also.... but not the beard.... it isn't uncommon around here to see big beards on smaller birds.... lol.... "record jake"...

Mine weighed 18 lbs and the beard was just shy of 6 inches it is almost the mate of superbrads bird, mine has fewer long feathers though .

I killed a 17lb 5 inch bearded jake two years ago.

look up one post from yours... turkeyslayer is in my area... also note that the tallow around the base of the beard I pictured is white... not brown and dried up.....

I think you are a dedicated bird hunter Hoyt... I don't wish to have an argumemt from you here.... but I put forward what I shot... it's not like I am looking for a record book entry here... Like I said, I shot a jake.... I could look back on your pics and say a few things but I choose not to... you guys got some nice birds...

What turkey that you have harvested ever has a beard where the hair wasn't dried up?....
