I've been shooting almost exclusively with Hornady Varmint Express 17 HMR polymer tip. The accuracy is quite good, .25" @ 50m but I was told Hornady 20gr HP XTP and Federal V-Shok hollow point could be even better performers? Any feedback will be appreciated.

Better performer for what? The 17g polymer is quite explosive. The 20g will penetrate a lot more. Test on full water bottles and see the difference. For accuracy? Gun decides that. I will say that my gun shoots the 17g marginally better. The only thing it really doesn't like is Winchester brand ammo- it is all over the place.

I'm aware that 20gr will penetrate a lot better but have you noticed any accuracy difference between same brand hollow point vs. polymer tip?

Accuracy will vary between lots (batches) of all makes and varieties of all 17hmr ammo. In other words, different batches of any one brand or variety may shoot differently in the same rifle. Some batches of ammo will shoot better than others. Since there is no 17hmr match ammo, none of it will be consistently accurate.

Thanks for the input.

Winchester used to be a proud company that now only produces scatter guns in rifle, shotgun, and in it's ammo. From the best guns in the world, to the worst, in just a few decades.

I shoot Hornady & CCI V-Max 17 gr both work
well in Anschutz & Cooper .
The only difference is one has Red tip
the other has Black tip.

As Grauhanen writes , there isn't any HMR Match
ammo just which brand works for your rifle.

I have tried pretty much every option I could find for my savage heavy barrel. CCI TNT HP by far is the most accurate. But like everyone else has said, buy a box of everything you can find and try them all with your rifle.

I bought one box of CCI TNT HP and I'll try it out tomorrow. Same as you, I went through at least 8-9 diffrent options on my 457 but all of them with a polymer tip. That CCI TNT is a 17gr hollow point so I'll bring CCI V-Max 17gr just for compassion. So Savage likes CCI?
