Hello everyone,

I previously was interested in getting the ruger 10/22 rifle but when I heard about how 17 hmr have more punch to them, I had second thoughts. So, with that been said, I want your suggestions. Thank you for your time and have a great day!

Sincerely,

Luke.

I seem to recall a lot of manufacturers having problems with the HMR. I had a 597 in this chambering, got rid of it due to bad accuracy. Soon afterward Remington stopped making them, Ruger stopped making them...I don't remember the details but you should check into this before getting one, if you can even find one.

The HMR round will probably run you 5 or 6 times the cost of .22 ammo. For a plinking rifle, I think you are much better served by the .22 for almost anything except longer range (100 yards +). Don't take this the wrong way, but your question implies that you are a beginner, and if so then a .22 is the way for you to go, at least for now.

The problem with a semi in that calibre is the speed of the bullet. It goes so fast that it does not build up enough pressure to make the bolt go backwards, to make it work you have to make the bolt lighter, then it moves faster and gets beaten to death, see the problem. I think the way to make it work is with a locked breach action. Erma used to make an M1 Carbine type rifle in .22 lr and .22 mag, the .22 mag was a gas operated gun, like the real M1 Carbine and was a locked breach. All other .22 mags semi's are straight blowback like a .22lr and therefore will not work.

Would be fun to find one of those Erma and experiment!!
