Spend some time and 600$ find a nice Springfield Armory GI 1911A1 and send it to Dlask Arms and get a 4 lb trigger job,Wilson combat sights and the Ejection port lowered and flared, only cost 225$You wont be dissapointed.

Whatever you do, I recommend you buy one USED. Gun value in my experience is a little like car value. If you buy new, you take a huge hit the moment it leaves the shop. At the very least, buying used from another member here on CGN will save you the taxes, and personnally, I have never regretted buying from a member here on the board, and I have done so many times. Just follow the recommendations for avoiding a scam, which is posted as a sticky in most of the Exchange forums.

The only new guns I have purchased, are the ones I have experience with (for example, I know single stack 1911s are for me) and therefore I count of having them a loooong time and don't mind taking the "hit" to have a brand spanking new one. Many dealers also sell used guns, a reputable dealer will at least guarantee that it works on arrival and will help you resolve any problems with the gun immediately after sale (ie they should stand behind what they sell, even used).

For well under $1000, I'd go with Ruger SR1911 or, if you like the GI models, the Remington R1.

If you want something closer to $1000 with a bit better build quality, Sig Sauer XO or Kimber Custom II. If you don't mind going used, you can usually find the blued Kimber Custom II for about $700-800 in the EE.

I've never seen a springfield that nice for $600 though. The ruger is not much more coin ($680) and comes with a beavertail grip safety. Wolverine backs everything they sell with a satisfaction guarantee warrenty too.

So after some serious debate I have decided to get my first pistol after Christmas when range memberships renew. I am looking for some suggestions on a good 1911 platform, .45 Acp preferred but open to 9mm, fairly accurate, and under 1000$. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated!

I vote Sig 1911...mine's a little more than your limit but worth it if you can find one.

OP> If it is a 45ACP hopefully you reload cause 45s are very expensive to shoot compared to 9mm.

Literally twice the price of 9mm for factory loads (17 cents a pop vs 33 at canadaammo.com). However, if you do reload, then it's only around 20% more which I feel is worth it.

Fwiw, 40 S&W goes for about 20 cents a round factory, and is negligibly more expensive to reload vs 9mm.

YMMV

I'm in the same position, looking for my first and have decided on a 1911. I however do not have the $1000 upper limit, mine is much lower. I've been looking at a new norinco 1911a1 deluxe for $340 plus tax. I don't think I'll find aything even close to that price other then .22lr variants like the GSG. Any suggestions on the government vs commander?

Are you planning on using for practical/action shooting, or purely slow fire at the range?

Very nice. At slightly over $1,000, these are far better values than Colts, S&W, Kimber, and Springfield. No MIM parts and usually found below the prices of the aforementioned. I can't wait to shoot my Tacpac.

You are not exactly correct about MIM parts with 1911 SIG.
The disconnector, slide stop, mag catch, grip safety, thumb safety, firing pin stop and (probably) plunger tube are all MIM.

I should have said no internal and crucial MIM parts. If I'm not mistaken, companies like Kimber use MIM very liberally outside of the frame and slide.

You are absolutely correct. However, I think it it worth to mention that properly made MIM part will last as long as the cast steel.
It's all about the quality...and it's where the problems start.
