Production: Try all the pistols you can. The key is to find ONE that fits your grip. Try Glock, CZ, Beretta, Tangfolio, etc...If you shoot factory get a 9mm, if you reload get a 9 or 40. Price: $800-$1500
Standard: Get a STI Edge, Trusight or Tangfolio Limited Custom, buy the best you can because you will upgrade sonner or later. 40 SW. Price: $1600 - $3000
Open: Most use Custom SVI's or STIs. The new Tangfolios look awesome too....Price: $3000 - $4000

As Musky Hunter said, if you're not into handloading yet, it might be worth considering the 9mm because the ammo is cheaper than 40S&W.
Try to visit an IPSC match and ask lots of questions to the guys shooting. Typically, everyone is very friendly and helpful because we all want to see the sport expand. They may even let you try their pistols to help you decide for yourself.

Even if it doesn't fit your hand, etc, the Glock is a good choice, because it is reliable and simple to maintain, and quite inexpensive. Your hand is smart, and can still learn the gun.
Yes, the CZ is cheaper, but it is by no means reliable, and much harder to maintain. My favorite was having to drift out that bloody pin to clean under the extractor, which constantly clogged with crap. Good times.

Your easiest decision is the divison, then it gets really personal, and you should handle various guns.

He's be much further ahead to get a G17 if he intends to shoot Prod or a more convetional 1911 style if he intends to shoot Standard ... or 1 of each
