Any thoughts on the Remington R1

kind of offtopic but i find anything from guns to gun cleaners that remmy makes now lacks quality nowadays, 20 yrs ago their stuff was amazing but lately it just lacks any sort of craftsmanship or quality. it all feels cheap. just my opinion... if you are looking for an inexpensive good quality 1911 go with a springfield, ria or sam or if you want to spend some money go with a sig.

Well I disagree with jackass .......I may have a bias since I own an R1.
I was impressed by the quality comparing it to a Colt Gov I used to own. The gus shoots straigh and I hit were I aim, cant' ask for more and in the 250 rounds fired so far - no stoppages what so ever and that was before I added the Wilson Combat hammer, sear, disconector, grip safety, mainspring housing and Karl Lippard barrell link and nose piece (compensator)

I was at my smith shop last night, and had the chance to handle the R1, the finish is not bad, in fact it is nice. slide to frame fit, a typical factory mass produce product a little play between slide to frame, but the bbl is nicely fitted. I have no idea on the price of this pistol, assuming its below the $600.00. then its worth looking at it.

I'm delighted with mine. It ain't like my tricked out Series '70 Gold Cup, but it's pretty good for a service grade pistol. Came with all the bells & whistles I consider necessary - sights, lowered and bevelled ejection port, bevelled mag well, long tang.
Could use some trigger improvement as it has the Colt Series '80 firing pin safety. I had a new box stock Series '70 Gov't model in my stash I'd been saving for years. It rattled when you shook it and a trigger pull that set your teeth on edge.
I happily traded it off for a 4" M29. I got the better of the deal.

Remington R1 1911A1....
The Remington R1 is decent quality for the money in the seemingly never ending current crop of 1911 pistols coming onto the market.
If you are fussy, then you might be taken aback by the fact that they didn't fit the ejector correctly on virtually all of the examples I've seen. Not that it isn't 'functional', it is. It's just that cosmetically, IMHO, for the price point they could've done a better job in that area.
Overall, it still get's a thumbs up, though.

I got to handle and inspect one and was very impressed. The finish quality is nicer than the usual pictures make it look. And the slide to frame fit and barrel fit was very good. The frame to slide had a slight play while the barrel to bushing fit was tight. Trigger was a shade heavy at around 6 to 7lbs and had a very slight creep. But since it's marketed and is supposed to be a copy of a GI service issue gun I'd say that it hit the mark spot on. If I were after a stock GI style setup it would be high on my own shopping list.
Hi guys thanks for all the coments, great pictures and detailed descriptions. My Grandfather willed me a Remington Rand Gi and the R1 looks very similar as well as i would not mind wearing it out as compared to my 1940's remington.

As long as you understand your 1940's "Remington" was made by a business machine company, and not "Remington" the firearms maker.....

the pistol is just special to me and i don't want to wear it out but love shooting 1911 45acp 38super pistols. I looked at IAC and a used springfield which i missed by a day. and i think for the money the remington strikes me as a decent buy.

I like them. The only thing that annoys me is what we pay compared to south of the border. - dan
I have one as well and while I enjoy it and my gunsmith thinks they are great value especially for a base to make a custom build gun from, I find the original sights gigantic and I prefer a blacked out trigger. I changed both and the gun looks and feels much better. Bottom line is that it's a good 1911 for the price. Here's a pic of mine:
I have owned a springfield 1911 operator, a norc 1911, and now the R1. I have to say, for $500 plus tax, it has every option I want, crisp smooth trigger, good finish, and once I changed the grips for my grooved hogues, it fits me perfectly. I don't think there's a better deal for the price. I would definately buy the R1 over the Norc for another, what, $100? Hasn't been choosy with the ammo yet, either.
slide issue
I’ve noticed that when I ease the slide slowly, it seems to hang up in the last little bit. It needs a slight push to go all the way forward. It works fine with the recoil or if racked hard with a round in. the mag. Any idea where might it be catching on?

Yes, and they still made a heck of a contract 1911A1 .45ACP pistol for WWII, though....

The stainless version looks pretty nice too...and it's only $56 more than the blued one from EPPS.
Damn!! Thats mighty fine lookin 1911!!! the 1911 is such a clean design.
