Any tips for hitting paper with my SKS

OK, so I've just gotten back into my old factory 26 and I plan on shooting it a bit more.

As I've stated in another thread I've owned two SKS's and both have functioned flawlessly but I can't hit anything with them (6-8" MOA)

I know it's not the gun, and I know I can hit things with my M14, AR15, CZ58, mini14, etc. I'm a bloody surgeon with my ARs! So it's not entirely my technique, or is it?

Anyway, my question is how do you guys aim the darn thing?

Have you done any mods to the sights? That darn rear notch is smaller than a Nat’s arse (no I'm not so old as to use the word "arse" but I am watching my language :D )

I'm reluctant to put any money into it, like adding some of the peep sights available, so what are your tips and tricks?

Or is it just practice?

Jeff

how i hit stuff with my SKS....
pull the trigger as fast i you can, reload, and do it a few more times.

they are not accurate rifles, 5" is the best i've ever done. the gun shop owner i got it from told my a good one will shoot 3"

put your money into a better quality rifle.

I think accuracy or more important, precision, must be highly variable in the chinese sks as my stock factory 26 seems to shoot almost as tight as my m14 at 100 yards. About 3-4 MOA if I'm really trying. After that, the M14 becomes more reliable ...however my stock is very tight to the barreled receiver and maybe it helps a little compared to one that just falls out... dunno. You could try an aftermarket stock?
If the rear sight really bugs you I've heard of people grinding the V a little wider - actually thinking about doing it myself but can't see how that will improve precision short of you not being able to see the front post. Anyway if your shooting 6-8 MOA at 100 yrds - your shootin well within the intended objective of this firearm design (slinging lead out to close range moving targets which may or may not be slinging lead back at you ;) ).

Whats he supposed to do with the Remington to aid in seeing the sks sights properly? Use the Remington as a file to slightly open up the rear sight? Perhaps jam the Remington into the ground to use as a monopod to steady the shot? Get a life...

Back to the original question:

Take a small triangular file and gently file the rear sight open a tad, make sure you go slow, taking metal off is easy, putting it back on is somewhat more difficult.

Try this. Grab the barrel and try and move the action within the stock. I bet it moves forward and aft quite easily. Now try and push the action up and down. Bet it moves in the vertical plane too.

The best thing to do is the bed that action into that stock. You want to eliminate all that wiggling around. Best if you can put just a smidge of tension of the front ferrule when you lock down the trigger group.

Now you will shoot to the accuracy of that barrel. If your chamber has an overly long throat, the best you can expect is 2 to 3MOA. If you have a normal looking throat AND use ammo it likes, you might even see the occasional MOA group. However, the average is likely in the 1 to 3 MOA range.

They will never be tack drivers but they can shoot better then the average AK. Meaning significantly better then a shotgun.

The rifle does not lend itself well to shooting small groups. Short sight radius plus unless you have the eyes of an eagle it is very difficult to aim at the same spot. When I am shooting at a piece of paper I am just guessing at where the middle is. In this respect I can get either of my sks to hit in 3 to 4 inches however I believe that the rifle is capable of more accuracy than indicated as I can keep the bullets on a piece of typing paper at 300 yards which is 8 X 11. Quite simply the rifle will hit the target at reasonable engagement ranges however it is not set up to be a target rifle.

At first I could not hit anything with my sks so I moved the targets right up to 25 yards and got an idea of where it was hitting ,it was bang on so I moved them out to 50 and tried again , after a few mags I was keeping them all on a surplus rifle.com target(standard sheet of paper) then I moved them out to 100yards and had no problem putting them on the target. I think one of the big things is building up confidence in the rifle after all the sks bashing that goes on around here. The sks is great Little carbine if you give it half a chance. Put some rounds through it at close range to make sure its sighted in, move your targets out as you gain confidence and ignore the naysayers .

PS I think that 303carbine guy is trying to drive down the prices on sks' so he can buy them all up:rolleyes:

Not true at all.
Here is a pic from last Spring, shot offhand...first two flyers while I figured out the iron sights.

And yes it is all about form.

I use a shot-gunners stance...elbow high and level (which forms a shoulder cup)...legs at a 45 degree stance.

But then modified it with my forearm against my body under the magazine.

Also adding a buttpad to lengthen the stock might help as these rifles where made for Russians in winter jackets, and combat vests, and later small Chinese.

So far everyone I have seen in person that has had accuracy problems with this rifle has had poor form, or ill fitting stocks to their body type. Also getting used to the long creepy trigger helps also.

Also remember that having a semi-auto is not about pulling the trigger as fast as possible, but is about taking advantage of the fact that unlike a bolt gun you can maintain your sight picture on your target while the rifle reloads for you.
