Any tips for hitting paper with my SKS

Just click on 303carbine's name. Then click on profile and on the left hand part of the screen it says add 303 carbine to ignore list. This should be stickied to the SKS forum
 
Thanks for all the tips guys. I think I'm going to hit the range and try some better form (trigger pull, sight picture, etc)

My action is very, very tight into the action; there is no wiggle at all and I have to pry the action out of the stock. My barrel is nice bright chrome with sharp lands and groves but those darn sights suck.

I own a VZ58 that I can get nice groups with, and it's got similar sights but they are different in that they are longer on the vertical plane and perhaps wider. Maybe I'll try the "V" notch rear sight.

I just know that this rifle can do better and that the 8" groups are my fault.

Also, although I own many rifles (ARs, M14, etc) I love the SKS and when I go waking around our pastures at night I always have it slung over my shoulder. I’ve put lots of rounds down the barrel and it's never jammed once.

It's got the ergonomics of a 2X4 but absolute reliability.

Notching the rear sight into a "V" will phuck up your point of impact even more...as rifles that are built with "V" notched rear sights have been factory calibrated for this type of sight. So IMHO I wouldn't mess with it.

Instead calculate distance to your target...front sight height (part without threads) is approx 1/3 the height of a man (2 meters) at 100 yards. Adjust rear sight for range...

Then put front sight on target like a golf ball on a golf tee, and bring the top of the rear sight level with the front sight. Use a Long stead trigger squeeze, and you should be good to go.

Next Sunny day I goto the range I'll take some pics and set up a "How to use your SKS sights" topic. I'm also assuming that your range is level, and doesn't go up hill as it goes further out...which would require some guess work to make up for the height.

I was being sarcastic. It's common knowledge that the 710 is probably the worst abomination ever to grace the gun racks. You can thank remington for arming the ignorant with a gun that most people wouldn't consider for a back up gun. Surprisingly it is still more expensive than the good ol' sks.

Given the choice between a norc sks and the best quality 710, or 770, or whatever remington tries to market it as I still would take the sks.

I used to own a norinco sks but I got bored of it and moved on to bigger and more expensive guns. I still think for what it is it's a great little gun and I might buy another one just for fun.
 
I just got back from the range. 1st time shooting the SKS.
15 yds - windage perfect - elevation a bit low - group inside a looney.
25 yds - windage perfect - dead center bullseye - group inside a $2 coin.
50 yds - windage perfect - high - group 5" - my eyesight is the ####s.
Have 6X32 scope on the way with a drill & tap side frame mount. For naked eyes @ 50yds, I was more than satisfied with my results.
I was impressed, from what folks say, the SKS is supposed to be as accurate as a pea shooter. Shoud be more than OK for coyotes once I get her scoped.
 
According to what I heard from others, the M43 ammo had to pass accuracy test before left factory. The standard is about 4~5 MOA.... (don't quote me on it.)
 
I put the tech 2000 or whatever it's called on one of my sks, and it works great. Has windage and elevation adjustments. The bonus is the longer sight radius and the tech setup stays put with a solid mounting system. The aperture sight is a lot easier to use than the standard original. I centered the front post in the protective shroud and use the shroud centered in the rear aperture for a fast sight picture. The alignment is then made with the elev. and windage on the tech. I'd give tech two thumbs up

Anyway, my question is how do you guys aim the darn thing?

Have you done any mods to the sights? That darn rear notch is smaller than a Nat’s arse (no I'm not so old as to use the word "arse" but I am watching my language :D )

I'm reluctant to put any money into it, like adding some of the peep sights available, so what are your tips and tricks?

Or is it just practice?

You want some tips on how to hit paper with your SKS. SELL IT!! Seriously I sold mine. Had no problem hitting paper at 50m and at 100m. However at 100m I DID HAVE A PROBLEM HITTING PAPER AFTER THE FIRST FIVE ROUNDS??:confused:

Personally I don't like shooting at air, so I let her go. I will be trying the CZ-858 instead.
 
Wow, sounds like a lot of guys here just don't like the SKS! I just recently bought mine and I love it. And the notion that an SKS can't hit paper is waaay exagerrated. I put mine in a good folding stock, did a partial bedding job on it, did a trigger job on it and scoped it and I can honestly hit 1.5 inches at 50 yards free standing all day long at my local gravel pit. I haven't hit the real range with it yet, but I'd bet I'll get honest to goodness sub 2 MOA with it. So if you want my advice, scope it, but in in a good stock and do a trigger job on it. You won't be dissapointed. For the rest of the guys who hate theirs; if they're current production Norinco's I may still be in the market.
 
Just took my D out today. I put a 6"X6" plastic container at 75 yards and I started shooting from a standing position, fast aiming with the iron sights, from a tactical sling.

I did six series of five and I only missed once, and that was my fault, not the gun; I got too fancy and I tried shooting off the cap off the container.

But like someone else here did, I rebeded the rifle. I am going back tomorrow and I am going to take my time, shoot supported and see what the ol' girl can do.

If I remember, I'll bring the camera and I'll post the results.
