I upgraded my 597 to a Savage 64. Then I upgraded that to a Winchester 490. Both of them are far superior to the 597.

Yeah, I get that. There is already a rail there, seems silly to install a picatinny rail on top of a 3/8" dovetail rail when you could just buy ultra cheap 3/8" rings.

That is pretty much the idea of upgrading..... getting rid of ultra cheap and going to something better and more solid.....
People were finding that when the scope rings were torqued down, it induced upwards force on the rail, by pushing against the receiver. The result was stripped receiver screws. The DIP rail ensures the bottom of the ring does not touch the recv'r, and the slots give more positioning options. I only paid $12 for my UTG 30mm rings, I figured that was pretty cheap already.
