Just curious if we have any milsurp collectors with US made Mosin's in their collections, and if so, what's the story behind your rifle? I was reading that some never left the US, while others were delivered to Russia before the revolution.

I had a Westinghouse made one and it was SA (Finnish Army) stamped. Like the most of them in Canada. My rifle was a part of the huge lot of rifles that remained in Finland after gaining independence from Russia.

That's pretty cool. So made in the US, shipped to White Russia, became a Commie gun with the Red Revolt, then used in Finland, becoming a Finnish rifle with their independence from the USSR (which all happened pretty quickly), then eventually back to North America. What a trip! If guns could talk.

The American made Mosin Nagants were mostly paid for by the British. When the 1917 Russian Revolution began, the shipments were stopped by England and the rifles remained in the USA.

After America entered the War, there was a great shortage of Springfield 1903 rifles, and the British Pattern 14 rifle was modified to use the 30-06 Cartridge, becoming the model 1917 Enfield. Actually more American Troops Overseas were armed with the M-1917 Enfield than the 1903 Springfields.

There were also 20,000 Ross 1905 rifles used by the United States. These, along with approximately 300,000 Mosin Nagant rifles were mostly used for drill and other training, but some did go to Russia with the American Troops.

I have Remington M-91. It's a 1916. It has German Reich marks on it and Finnish SA marks. So it probably was captured by the Germans and then given to the Finns.
It also has a post 1928 modern Izhevsk mark on the rear sight leaf that makes me think it might have found it's way home

A minty Westinghouse.
I can't find any Finish marks or stamps and suspect it never left north America.

The US also armed their troops with Mosins for their intervention in Russia.

I have some US made Mosin Nagant rifles. Some of the US rifles have a wonderful trail of ownership and travel. One of my menagerie is a US Remington barrel on a Russian receiver (1904). I have two others, one a Remington, the other a New England Westinghouse.

The old rifles command a dizzying array of history. All the different variations, stampings, manufacturers, and areas of service provide an almost never ending source of information and interest to those of us who are hooked on this type of collecting. Great stuff!:)
