Any Way To Date A Mossberg 151M?

As the title says, is there any way to track a year of production for my 151M? I took a look tonight and can't see a serial number anywhere obvious, so that should mean pre-'68 for sure. Any other help out there?

I just recently registered a Mossberg 351K and like you looked and looked for a serial number. Seems according to the CFC they didn't put serial numbers on them. Gentlemen, thanks for the info. What are the differences between the M, M(a), and M(b)?

The sights have been changed. as well the butt plate was changed from metal to plastic.

If I were looking to date a Mossberg, I would show up in my Sunday Best at its house with flowers and ask it if it would like to go for a quiet dinner with me.

That's how I'd go about dating a Mossberg.

The barrel says 151M, no subscript and it has the S-130 rear aperture with the 4 post front sight. Any ideas?

DocM.....How can you be happy dating "a" Mossberg? it takes a few of them to keep me happy.lol...lol. Before the serialization of guns that began in 1968 in Canada, it was not possible to pinpoint a year of manufacture. thus they have to be classed as "circa". Some can be close due to the years sights were changed or model numbers changed.

All I can figure is that the gun was made late in 1947, perhaps doing a left-over parts cleanup and they ran out of the S100 peep sights and installed a S130 sight as some 151M(a) were made late 1947.

The 151M(a) had a S130 peep sight.

Actually, it's funny you say that... I presently own two, and love them both. Both are late-model 12Ga shotguns, however. Nothing 'historical' about them - a 500 pistol-grip and an 835 Ulti-Mag which got its first birds two weeks after it was bought.

The only "shotgun" I own is a 1918 #1MkIII* in 2 1/2" .410. The Mossys that have found a home with me are a 51M ( flat back), 151M(a), 151M(b), 152, 144lsb. All terrific guns and really accurate. Great gopher getters. I had a few others that passed thru my hands, but they found new homes where they are loved. And used....
