Any workshops in 2017 in Ontario @ long range shooting?

Thank you all!

I joined CSSA.
Hoping to find something without spending a small fortune. The August event looks amazing, but $900 is out of my budget.

Well ORA runs numerous matches; depending apun range availability. ORA has no membership limitations (other than the usual, reasonable - safety and licensing requirements) - however the Milcun opportunity sounds pretty reasonable if it is $900 for 4 days of shooting AND their coaching. Keith and Linda work with the professional community and have years and years of international competitive experience. If you are serious about marksmanship ... you need solid coaching and LOTS of practice. You can do it all yourself (or try) but you will waste a whole lot more money buying ammunition to achieve anywhere near the level of competence you will if you enrol with Milcun.... Similarly 'Tactical Teacher' will certainly flatten that learning curve dramatically if you are able to get out for one of his sessions. Personally I believe that practice (LOTS of practice) is critical - but you will never regret getting guidance from Milcun .. or Tactical Teacer.

There is a world of difference between receiving intensive professional coaching and going to match practice days. Both are beneficial, one dramatically more so.

How about this perspective. To join the ORA is $185 for the year. Match fee's are $30 each match as a member, please correct me if I'm wrong but I think $75 for non members (includes guest fee of $45.).

So, you're over $200 and still have not had a moment of instruction in how the match works, let alone how to shoot effectively at distance. Ammo, time, travel costs. food, add another $75 lets say for the day, match ammo is not cheap.

So almost $300... one third the cost of world class instruction on your doorstep. A week's worth of shooting that would take you 4 months of Sundays, shooting matches, to accomplish, maybe. I understand tight budgets, if you can somehow swing it, it's a one time cost that will save you a lot of money in the short and long term. The other option is catching a clinic with Tactical Teacher, who is amazing and I have learned a lot from him. He was also coached by, guess who, wait for it...

Keith and Linda...

I completely understand and it makes total sense. I still can't afford to put out $900... This all is just a hobby for me(along with a few other hobbies) and there's no way my wife would allow me to spend this kind of money :)

Speaking of do it yourself approach. I actually enjoy figuring things out - it's all part of the fun. So whether it will take me a month or a year, that doesn't really makes any difference to me. I am not in a rush to get to any particular point. As long as I am enjoying this outdoor activity on my day off work, right?!

I totally get where you're coming from. It's a hobby for me too, I'm certainly not getting rich from it, and "it", can get very expensive!!

Any day at the range is still better than a day at work.

Petawawa will be a great experience. Barney (Tactical Teacher), will get you going and work you through and over some of the early bumps. It will be a great intro, I hope you have a great experience. Come back and let us know how it went.

It was greeeaaat! Surplus ammo and chinese scope were working better than expected.
I am hoping to perhaps find some range time to practice 500+meters for a bit longer with no ticking time clock :) I definitely wasn't used to that. As Barney said, we got too used to drinking coffee and slowly sending some rounds in between the sips :D

Sounds like a good time. Barney has a way of cutting through the BS.! See if you can sign up for a long Range practice at Milcun. Running most Sundays this season. Many are already sold out, but there is a waiting list usually. Get out to 600 meters there with people around who can offer some tips.

Mike Brake I believe is the point man on these.

I see Mike has a course on the 25/26 July. This would be very much worthwhile.
His Long Range Rifle Practices are just that - practice days. There are prerequisites to participate. Start at 100m to confirm zero, then move to the other range and shoot on back. Establish zeros for longer ranges, get to shoot on a beautiful range.
There is a really interesting instructional clinic this weekend - spotter training. Looking forward to this.

Word of warning - the bugs are bad this year. Blackflies seem to have waned, but the mosquitos and deer flies are abundant. As bad as I've seen them.

Spotter clinic today. Beautiful weather. I didn't need bug dope; I was pleasantly surprised. The conditions were right to observe "swirl", with each shot being indicated. Enough wind that the spotter could really see the results of the sight adjustment information given to the shooter. Not often that you have the opportunity to experiment, with immediate feedback.
