Anybody actually hunt with a steyr scout?

Tikka arctic 8.13lbs
Steyr scout 6.6 lbs
Ruger scout 7.1 lbs
Savage scout 7.8 lbs

So 3.5lbs off the arctic gives you a scout rifle weighing 4.6lbs. Good luck with that.

Lots of manufacturers making Scouts today, in every price range: Savage (2 including an Axis), Mossberg, Ruger, Steyr. The range is pretty well covered. I personally think the original Savage Scout offers the best value for the dollar, but they all give you the chance to try the concept out for yourself.

Building one yourself, or having one built for you, is unlikely to be cost-effective compared to the factory offerings; but we are gun nutz, after all, and having exactly the thing you want (and knowing that it is unique) is certainly a valid reason to do it.

One thing, though: it would be a shame to get too hung up on the exact, precise parameters laid out by Cooper when he pioneered the idea. So what if your gun is a few ounces too heavy, or a half-inch too long? It's your gun; do it up the way you want. I always laugh when some guy comes on the Scout Forum, shows a really nice rig that he has assembled to his own specs at great expense and effort...and then somebody pipes up with "Nope, sorry...that's one quarter inch over length. No good!"

My bad I guess - I got the T3x arctic weight straight from the Cabela's posting of that rifle for sale. In that posting they list the weight at 10 lbs which compared to the Steyr weight is 3.4 lbs difference. That being said I went on the Tikka website and it gives the T3x arctic at 8.13 lbs - still overweight but definitely better at about 1.5 lb difference.

I agree it's better not to be hung up on the exact weight and length but if you start out with a rifle that is specifically advertised as light weight than you have a good chance of getting as close as possible to the Scout criteria and thus are able to really have something different (handier) that your regular hunting rifle. I think that the Tikka T3x superlite is a good start

Mine's going on eleven years with no problems. Very accurate and suberb two stage trigger.
Steyr don't want you mucking about with the trigger, so no factory info on trigger adjustment comes with the rifle,
but.... Fr. Frog has a web site with all kinds of good information on the Scout, including trigger
adjustment. He will email a copy of the adjustments upon request. His site is:

+1! Fr.Frog is a goldmine of both useful info and useless trivia. :) Required reading for Steyr Scout owners.
