Anybody else got a VZ-specific chest rig?

As we all know, one of the oddities of the VZ platform is the funky mag size. AK pouches don't necessarily fit VZ mags, and AR mags obviously don't normally work.

So to build a good rig for defense or competition can be a bit tricky, I think. Here's what I've done:

I mainly use Tactical Tailor 7.62 NATO pouches. These take up a couple of Molle rows and work just like an AR shingle. They aren't as deep as AR pouches, though, and they have a retention elastic over the top which is in the way. They're slightly oversized for VZ mags, so obviously with the shallow pouch and slightly loose fit, you have a problem.

I nabbed this image from Dave's Surplus - hopefully they don't mind as that's where I get 99% of my nylon gear and maybe this will generate a bit more traffic for them anyway.

So what I do is take the elastic retainer off the pouch. It's just knotted on so this is easy.

Then I wrap it through the Molle webbing like so:

VZ-308pouch2.jpg

Now we're talking...the elastic makes for good retention on the VZ mags, especially with that big thick magwell area on them.

You can see here how the mag fits:

It's in there pretty good but doesn't require too much effort to put in. That's important to me because I actually run one pouch - this one - on a belt, and feed it with the chest rig, rather than load straight off the rig all the time. I do this because I saw some guys a lot better than me doing it this way, and I think it's probably a better method.

So here is my rig:

VZChestRig.jpg

TT Two piece MAV, bought secondhand from somebody who took it to Afghanistan. Included real afghani dirt! There was a fine, chalky dust everywhere inside it when I first got it. It was in good shape though.

The other gear on there is as follows, left to right:

1) TT Triple AR pouch. Actually holds Israeli bandage and a CAT tourniquet. The idea there is that if I ever accidentally blow a hole in my leg, or somebody else at the range does, I can get the blood stopped. Or, in the extremely unlikely event that I'm using this rifle to defend myself, and it turns out that I'm not that good at it, I can fix the first one or two holes somebody puts in me.

2) TT Triple AR pouch with the flap cut off. This holds a couple more VZ mags. It's not my ideal solution as once one mag is out, retention is not that great on the second. But, I had it lying around and figured what the hell. It works fine for range duty, anyway.

3 & 4) TT 7.62 pouches, as explained. On top: TAG Enhanced double pistol mag pouches. Hold two of my G20 mags each. My thinking here is that in the even more unlikely event that I am shooting out of necessity, and something goes wrong, I have a secondary gun to transition to. And with the 5 round limit on VZ mags, the pistol might turn out to be pretty useful. I can clear a malfunction pretty fast on the VZ but if things are weird and I can't, I can draw the G20. Not that if I ever needed a gun to save my life, I would have this thing on. However, I recently bought a full-length mirror and although I haven't tested it yet, I bet this will work awesomely for posing in front of it with.

5) Maxpedition Roly Poly dump pouch. In the real world, this would be for partial mags. In Canada, with the 5 round limit, I don't even know what a partial would be. Two rounds? Come to think of it, with 5 round mags this is probably useless.

I forgot to take pics of my belt. But it's a simple rig: 1 VZ mag, 2 Glock mags, 1 holster.

The idea with the two rigs is that if you have to dump your chest rig, or you just don't have it on, because you're walking around on a military base that is surrounded by people who want to kill you, as so many of us are in our day to day lives, you're still armed and have some spare ammo. I guess for me it has no particular use. When I actually use the belt, I'm at the range running my Glock and I keep 4 G20 mags and no rifle mags at all. In the event of major ugly violent disaster, I guess I'd go back to the battle setup. That would give me a theoretical:

60 rounds of rifle ammo on the belt and gun
45 rounds of pistol ammo on the belt and gun

another 120 rounds of rifle ammo on the chest rig
another 60 rounds of pistol ammo on the chest rig

So that's the SHTF setup, assuming the S H T F shortly after the laws go back to normal. And that's my VZ rig and how I came up with pouches that work well for the VZ. One nice thing - this is all made-in-the-first-world (well, except the dump pouch), quality, lifetime warranty gear.

misanthropist :

Good on you my friend, that is a well thought out rig. I like the stuff TT puts out, and well Daves is an excellent spot to get it.

I would very much like to see pics of that belt you speak of.

TT also makes an AK chest rig, and I had Daves bring one if for me. At arround $100 or so I thought it would be a very good place to start as its spesifically for the curved AK mag and the VZ's have a similar contour. However I like you rig better, as I find it a tad on the small side wrt mag count (4 single carbine mags, and 2 pistol mags). However if one were to augment it with a belt, a dump pouche & a hydration carrier like a cammel back, that may just be the ticket.

The rig I am talking about looks like this:

Any thoughts??

I just picked up an Eagle Industries AK 6mag chest rig that I've been eyeballing for a long time. I was fortunate enough to walk in to Dave's Surplus yesterday and they had 1 left! I was so surprised they actually had one. Looks like they'll be stocking Eagle stuff again but slowly.

Fantastic piece of kit...here it is:

Holds 6 mags and the retention is awesome. I don't prefer the flap covers so for now I've tucked them into each rear pocket, doesn't interfere with inserting or removing a mag. There is a divider as well between each front and rear mag so minimal metal to metal although on a fast mag grab I can feel a slight snag at times...I have the mags bullets up so the bottom of the mags with all the edges can catch a bit but very minimal.

I also added a Tactical Tailor Magna 3 pistol mag pouch which is extremely well built. Each pocket has a magnet which is kinda of a neat feature to keep your mags in place.

I've positioned this on the left side as I shoot right-handed. Unfortunately it pretty much takes up the whole area so I can't add anymore but it's sufficient...for now...haha.

On the empty right area I'll most likely add more TT pouches for a flashlight, small med pouch, etc. There is really not much molle area on this rig but it's comfortable, feels low-pro and the built in AK mag pouches are a fantastic fit for the VZ/CZ mags.

Yep by far the best all round one I've found as well. Its just simple, clean and can be expanded if necessary. Plus you can't beat the price.

I never close the flaps and the mags never move.

Eagle's dealer policy in Canada isn't all that great but their stuff is simple, effective and affordable.

I would have liked to see it carry 8 mags and have the MOLLE extend around the back further.

In my experience, and having used a couple of rigs like that the only thing I could say about it is: "Symmetry is death." Reason being that even though it looks clean, having to reach all the way across your body to access that secondary pistol mag pouch would be a serious pain... and decently time consuming (when seconds count)

I like to have all my primary ammo closest to my feeding hand (in my case left) and my secondary ammo right behind (or on) the primary ammo. It usually looks lopsided and wierd but I can run it very easily and quickly. Things like lights, knives, secondary, grenades... I keep all that on opposite side.

IMHO,

HH

That is my take as well..I am willing to go to about 1 o'clock with mags for the primary but I would rather keep them from 12 o'clock to 9 o'clock.

There is a great article on M4c right now about setting up chest rigs...it was written by a guy I know from another site, who was a weapons trainer from the USMC and served a few tours in Iraq. He only does ammo on the support side as well.

I wouldn't panic over any of the rigs I see here...but my personal preference is for a) modularity and b) ammo to the left, although I do keep a couple of mags further right than ideally I would like. Now that I am not going prone any more, as I did with M14s, I have been thinking I would get the adapter for the from on the rig and move the 1 o'clock mags to the noon position.

One thing that is important to me that I find a little tough on some of the "fixed mags across the front" rigs is either-hand access to a emergency first aid kit. But some guys relocate that to the belt. I'll see if I can grab some pics of my belt today...it is still in "test mode" so I have not got it dialed quite the way I have my chest rig.

But I do like all the rigs I'm seeing in here...nice gear for sure.

ETA: If I had your skills Reaper I'd probably keep the mags in my pockets as well...you probably still do a faster mag change than I do.

Good info here folks,
I am trying to make up a VZ rig myself and would appreciate opinions.....I am tending toward HSGI universal modular mag pouches and was hoping for some input on each style (open and closed top).

Cheers

I run the HSGI mag pouches, they work as advertised, no issues.

misanthropist, would love to see a pic of your belt rig when you have the chance. I'm assuming the VZ mag must ride high on the belt then judging by your choice of pouch? I wonder if there's a pouch more 'love handle' friendly, haha.

Here, actually the gf is not quite ready to go out so I grabbed 3 quick pics:

It's not much like what the trendy guys are wearing...I just had a massive leather work belt handy and bought a TT duty pad for $18 to make it an overtop kind of belt rig.

The pistol mag pouch is actually what I would normally have on for pistol shooting/ipsc drills so not quite in line with my normal molle gear, but I didn't have time to dig through the cordura pile for my usual stuff. You get the idea.

The holster is a Serpa which I have mixed feelings about...I got a SMOKING deal on it so I thought I would give it a go and it's been pretty good. It rides too high for this sort of setup but I haven't built a drop for it yet.

I would like to replace the belt with a cobra rigger's belt, maybe. This belt is 16-oz leather - it's massive - and mainly I would like to have it back for my jeans. But it works great.

I would consider putting a small FAK on here and moving my drop pouch to the belt as well, but so far, I have not kept it that way, because I use the belt for a few different things and I just got sick of moving everything around all the time, and I feel like having the all-out-war setup at skills and drills night is just ridiculous overkill.

On the other hand I target shoot with full-power loads out of a 10mm glock...overkill is what I do.
