The relatively new Leupold VX-6 3-18X44mm scope with FireDot reticle has been discussed a lot lately on the Rimfire Central Forum, with one member (who posts a lot) there concluding that it's the very best "all-around scope" available bar none. This conclusion seems to be based largely on the FireDot reticle. I guess I can see this reticle as being effective for hunting in low light conditions. However, how good is it for range-shooting--target, BR, silhouette, etc.?
Anybody Have Experience with the Leupold FireDot Reticle?

I have the VX6 1-6x24. Firedot is excellent. Daylight bright and adjustable intensity(at least on mine). Mainly use it for easy, quick target acquisition in games I play. Would work great for low light level hunting situations. Can't really see the need for it in precision shooting like BR and Silhouette. Battery life is great. Turns itself off if not being used and on instantly if moved. Pretty neat. Hope this helps some.
I had that exact scope with firedot and really liked it...did have a minor parallax issue that turned in to a ####show with Korth (leupolds Canadian warranty depot) and returned the optic to Cabelas...simply because of the terrible warranty service. They are a really good scope though and the firedot was really nice when I used it the 2x for coyote hunting.

I have a Leupold VXR 3-9x40 with the firedot reticle and really like it. I usually use a VX3 2.5-8x36 for a hunting scope because it is light and simple. I was a little concerned about putting electronics into my scope but so far so good. It does make for a heavier scope. The firedot makes low light shots in the woods much easier with faster target acquisition. The ability to tune the dot intensity up or down is very nice. It is also excellent on the range with the dot on the lowest setting. So far I am very happy with it.
I have the VX-6 1-6x24 with the firedot reticle on a .375 H&H. It actually compares quite favourably to the illumination in my Zeiss HT 3-12x56, as well as to the Swarovski illuminated reticles. In other words Leupold got this one right. It is a nice small dot, and adjusts from very bright for use in bright sunlight to very dim for low light shooting. The dot has minimal flare, and on 1X allows quick shooting with two eyes open, similar to my Aimpoint.
For target shooting I don't see any advantage to an illuminated reticle, it really helps more for snap shots on game or in very low light.

I have a 2-7 vxr on my muzzle loader, I like it so much, my future plans are to have the firedot on every single rifle that I use (5+ rifles). For what it is worth, I was not a Leupold groupie, but I am now baptized and born again Leupold fan.
A buddy of mine has that EXACT (the one from the OP) on his hunting rifle. I've not shot anything with it, but have looked through it a number of times under different conditions. It is a fantastic scope and I do like that reticle. I have a VX-6 3-18 x 50mm BDC with illuminated B&C reticle on my current hunting rig and just absolutely love it. The sub tensions of the B&C are nice to have when stretching out the ranges on game, but obviously take some practice/verification...and the reticle does take some adjustment/getting used to compared to a standard duplex for example.
