I'm really thinking about getting one of these. Tell me what your experience is with this calibre and what animals you've taken.

9.3 x 62

Buddy of mine has one and loves it. The only reason I don't have one is that I have a 338-06 Imp. and Lapua brass for the 9.3x62 is very pricey although you can make it out of 30-06 or better yet 35 Whelen

Great round. I took one to Africa in 2002 and it did wonders on game from 100# bushbuck at 250 yards to 1800# eland at 40 yards, all with the 250 gr Barnes X at 2650 fps. I have also bumped a few hogs with it, of course with aplomb. For the basic 30-06 case I cannot think of anything better unless you plan on shooting critters out past 300 yards.

Ellwood epps has Graf brass for $39 for 100.

Haven't shot mine yet, as my brass isn't here yet. I'll be running 250 grain accubonds for bear this spring.

My neighbor is a little bit more of a gun nut that I am, but he doesn't have a computer. He has a 9.3x62, 2 of 9.3x64 brenneke and a 9.3x66 sako. The 9.3x64 is the one he's really excited about.

I've hunted with a 9.3X62 for the past two seasons and managed to kill a small moose and a nice 6X7 elk. Both were at very close range and both went down fast and hard. The 286 gr Nosler Partition at about 2350 fps does a fine job.

I'm partial to Mauser 98's and putting a 62 into a 98 is a very simple process. Just screw on a new barrel. No other mods required.

In fact, I like the 62 enough that I just built a second one:runaway:. It's a FN Mauser with a 21" Heym barrel in a walnut laminated stock. Here's a pre-finished photo.

I have a 9,3 x 57 origonal sporter from 1920 and I shoot 286 grain ,open sights ,and it is very accurate .and here in 100mile house bc there is nothing it doesnt make a sack of potatoes out of.

I could see myself shooting a 9.3x62 someday, Sako makes some nice rifles chambered in it. A 286 grainer @ 2300 fps sounds like some wicked medicine for anything in North America inside 250 yards

Some writers with modern guns have been running up around 2500 for the 286ers and 2700ish for the 250s. Nipping close at the heels of the .375 H&H at those levels. John Barsness and Layne Simpson have both had pretty good articles on handloading them recently.

Me, since I'm running a gun built just after the end of WWII, I figure a 250 accubond at 2500ish will do fine for anything on the continent, though I'd probably step up to 286 partitions for coastal browns, if I had the chance. A 250 grain bullet in the 9.3 is the sectional density equivalent of a 180 in a .308 cal, so I don't see what I'd gain by going to heavier bullets for most hunting situations.

Man, this waiting thing is killing me. I've had it for almost a month now, and still haven't gotten it out yet.

To be honest, I don't see a huge difference between this and the .35 Whelen. However, I am interested in getting a CZ 550 because I like the control round feed and I love the single set trigger. They don't make it in a .35 Whelen, though so the 9.3 x 62 would have to be the next best thing. It would be better than reboring or rebarrelling a brand new gun. I do reload so I guess I could just resize Whelen brass or .30-06 brass to shoot.

You're probably better off ordering the actual brass. The 9.3x62 isn't derived from the 06 case, and there's a very small difference in case diameter -- not enough to cause problems unless your rifle has a sloppy chamber, from what I hear -- but Epps has brass and so does Tradex, so you can save the hassle of fireforming. Also, Epps' brass is 39$ for 100, so it'd be cheaper than buying whelen brass.

Get the graff's brass from epps or bc redneck, I'm currently running it in 3 of these rifles and quite happy with it. Dont turn up your nose at their 286 gr bullets either (Privi Partisan) you'll find them pretty stoutly constructed for a cup and core bullet and a lot tougher than the speer 270 gr.

One bull moose at 140yds and the 9,3x57, 270gr Speer.
One little whitetail buck at 80yds with the 9,3x62 and 250gr Accubond.
Both on the ground before the barrel came down from recoil. Just the kind of tracking job I like.

Had a 338-06 for a couple years too and shot several head of game with it. Both have great history and both work very well on all sorts of beasties.

One of the guys from Sweden I guided last year had a Tikka T3 in that calibre. Looked real nice with the Leupold Scandanavian scope he had on top. 1 shot, one moose, excellent penetration (actually it went right thru) at about 21 yds.

Nice looking cartridge too.

I built mine on a 1909 action timney trigger,FN shroud,Corelight stock,20" Heym barrel, D&T for leupold mts ,welded on a Brownells bolt handle and then Parkerized the whole thing. Took it Moose Hunting but got rained out. May be putting on the EE but don't know what to ask for it. I'm going 7x57 now getting recoil sensitive at 69 .JITC
