So I'm planning to buy a rifle in .45-70 sometime in the new year. I was leaning towards a lever gun originally, but this evening while browsing some of the site sponsors' websites I noticed these Baikal double rifles available in .45-70. I've never used a double rifle, but I do like the idea of owning one. The price is not much more than the lever guns I've been looking at, so if they are quality rifles then I may have to give them further consideration.

So, have any of you guys owned or used one of these Baikal double rifles? If so, what did you think of them?

I have one and love it. Short fast well balanced. Fit and finish isn't the greatest. Mine groups very well and came with a signed and dated sheet verifying it was regulated to with in 5mm vertical and 24mm horizontal spread. The barrels aare adjustible for horizontal spread. I have a 2.5x20 scope on mine. They are stiff to open but they are the only $1000 double on the market

I've had a couple of those, in both .45-70 and .30-06, and I feel they are a fantastic value for the money. Like Brybenn said, where else are you going to get a true double rifle for a thousand bucks? Fit and finish were okay, the wood was surprisingly nice, accuracy was good...and make no mistake...you get the true double-rifle two-superfast-shots experience. Tons of fun. I should have kept one.:(

I have a few older Baikal rifles and shotguns and found their quality to be good, very very reliable and comfortable firearms. The last one I purchased was a newer model and the had changed to many plastic parts instead of brass and the quality was poor, however is was their lowest end model.

I am tempted to try one of these doubles, as I know they have made some good rifles and shotguns.

I have both the 45/70 and the '06 in doubles.... fun guns to play with and get your buddies jealous when you pull out a "double"! Shoot not bad for what they are.....

Compare them to a lever? To me (yes IMHO) they aren't too comaparible.... lever shoot more accurate, holds more ammo and probably is more in demand! I have a big bore 94. .375 win and a 45/70 lever..... 45/70 will come along for a camp gun while others sit at home.....

I prefer the double over the lever myself. I shoot skeet and hunt with a baikal sxs shotgun which is the same frame as the double. It points and shoots where ever I look. The double has the fastest follow up of any action type and fits me perfectly. Mine actually has nice wood on it to although a bit worse for the wear now as I've hunted with it. The double has less rounds yes. But how often do you need more then 2 shots? A lever maybe more accurate but my double can put 2 where it counts faster! 2shots from each barrel print within 2" at 75 yards from a rest Even though its just a baikal it still has the romance of a true double. Everyone who has shot mine loves it when shooting mild loads (its a light gun). The sound of dropping 2 rounds in the chamber is very satisfying. I have my gun set up to shoot hornady 350gr fn at 1750fps at the muzzle. Not super fast but pleasant enough to shoot all day and hammer down anything in its way. A double is not for everyone but for thick bush where shots are close they are ideal. And I don't have to look for my brass on the forest floor

I wonder what the possibility is of getting shotgun barrels fitted. I am starting tools this rifle for a cheap double, and in 45-70!!!

Well I like most of what I've read about these rifles so far. What kind of accuracy are these rifles capable of at 100 yards? I'm not too concerned with its accuracy beyond that, but the ability to hit the vitals on deer-sized game out to 100 yards is pretty important.

Mine has a 2.5" center to center group for 3 shots. Don't matter which barrel. If I had a more appropriate scope the gun is capable of doing better. 2.5x20mm thick post retical the wire covers the center of the target at 100 yards. The factory sights are not great but usable
