Anyone bed their USGI fiberglass M14 yet?

Lots of great info so far. Now, what product have u guys used for bedding the action and where can it be purchased?
Also, I sent an e-mail out to Rooster33 about a week or so ago for pricing on his NM spring guide and cheek peice, but haven't gotten a reply. Anyone direct me to where to contact him, or source these items?
Thanks,
AG.

Hey Hungry, is your beding method work for both USGI fiberglass stock and el cheapo rancho chinese wood stock?

thanks!

does anyone have the instructions/ pictures on how to bed the USGI fiberglass stock?

Would it amke a big difference for a stock Norinco (the only mechanical part that I changed was the op-rod spring)? Or should I wait until a bigger project (changing the bbl, unitizing the gas system, etc) is done, so I can benefit from it?

Bedding is bedding. Principle stays the same...

Some people say the Norinco stock has no effect from bedding because the wood is really soft. On the other hand, complete refinish with curing the wood and oiling it up helps harden it. You won't lose anything by trying to bed it....would make a good practice stock to bed on.

Has anyone tried or heard of bedding these rifles similar to the M25, with a steel liner/bedding block so the action can be removed and replaced in the stock without affecting the zero? I've only heard of one company in the US (that I could find) that uses this method, but he doesn't sell these liners seperately.

In the past with the steel liners, I took a dremel tool and hogged out about 1/16" to 1/8" of metal in the interior to accommodate the rear mortises of the receiver. This was a time consuming undertaking....

I must warn wood stocked M14 lovers, that before bedding your rifle... you must decide how much you need or want to strip, clean and assemble that rifle. Remember that every time you strip or remove the barreled receiver from the stock, you will compromise the bedding job.

As a match shooter, I pulled the barreled receiver out of my McMillan match stock ONCE a year !! The rest of the time, everything was cleaned out from the exterior. Hunters and casual shooting M14 lovers, you don't really want to rush out and have your stock bedded.

Accuracy lovers WILL want their stocks bedded and I suggest into a glass stock. Sometimes I will do "not so National Match" bedding jobs, that is a light surface bedding behind the receiver mortises and very light job under the rear tang and in the trigger group interface. This way you get a middle of the road bedding job and can still remove your rifle out of the stock at least a few times of the year.

If you cannot decide what kind of bedding job you would prefer, then don't even consider bedding this bangstick , yet....

I'm hoping none of you will rush and beg to get this job done if you are not actively competing with your M14.....

I hope this sheds some light on things.... I just don't want you to spend a bunch of money and then decide that you are just hunting with this bangstick that cannot be stripped more than once a year.

Barney

Ok... ..I can't stand it any more...I have to pipe in.

You guys !!!!!

:slap:

A newer M14 USGI FG stock does not need nor should it be bedded.
There were not designed to be bedded.

There is not a lot of material to play with on these stocks, if you have beefed it up like Hungry did a while back....maybe it might be an option.

A well worn out USGI stock could be skim bedded at best, under the trigger housing area and a little on the top. Do not do a FULL bedding on a USGI FG stock.....in the long term you will weaken it.

If you are concerned about accuaracy.....find some other issues with your rifles. I only read a few of the replies........but after building and bedding these rifles over the years I have never heard of any the 'old school' guys (Hungry, Mr*, BillC, Savage [these 4 have about 80 years combined M14 expertise]....SKBY or myself.....sorry for any that I missed) ever bedding a USGI FG

Smith Ent is shipping 'Crazy Horse' rifles to all branches of the US forces with unbedded 45 year old FG stocks and with Smith parts are getting Sub MOA results....I have built a few CH type Norcs and managed the same results.
NO BEDDING REQUIRED

Don't waste your time......now playing with a norc stock might be a benifit, NM stocks require bedding...

You will not find bedding data for a USGI stock.....for a reason.

So Bed these stocks

Macmillan
GI wood
GI NM wood
Any newly made wood

Do not bed these stocks

Sage or Milarm Aluminun stock
JAE-100
USGI FG

I stand firm on this post.....unless of course Lee Emerson  (aka Different) shoots me down.......:bangHead:

Well.....that was a rant and a 1/2....boys I'm back!!!
