Anyone bought a Yugo Mauser?

I like them and I think you get good value for your money ........ :)

I've got two Yugos, one of which with claven2's help, I converted to a period sniper configuration. I haven't shot the M48 with "iron sights" yet, but the pseudo M48A sniper shoots really well. I've had it out to 300 meters so far. I have seen some board discussions about sticky bolts, but I haven't experienced it myself. Perhaps others here that have experienced it, can speak to that issue.

That's a great scope rig on your Yugo, how much was the scope and mounts ? I am seriously considering doing the same myself.

They're ok, I bought one, but I still prefer the K-98's for their sleeker and better looks and smoother bolt.

Some people might disagree with me here but I'd say just buy a new Savage for just over $300 and you'll get a "as new" gun that you can at least mount a scope on easily.

There is no comparison between a commercial savage and a yugo mauser! They are not even in the same class. One was built to feed a capitalist the other to defend against the capitalist!

I agree a german K98 is a more desirable rifle buy for the $$$$ it is nice to get a brandspanking new mauser.

If you are buying a first mauser my suggestion would be to get a swedish M38. That is as good a value in rifle as you will ever get. Nice ones are on the board all the time in the 300-400 range. I can't buy all them so you might as well get one!

I have a m48 and yeah I had to clean up a few rough spots and push the front sight aways but it is a workhorse, accurate, safe and strong, strong strong. Loaded stiffly a 196 grain 8mm bullet is serious bussiness. You wont regret owning one.

What do you mean "dicked with". The Yugo Mausers are genuine Mauser variants.

The Yugo Mauser parts have been scrubbed, sanded, force matched,
reblued, renumbered. Still very functional, not as collectable, and not the same as when it left the Mauser factory. That is what I mean by "dicked with".
Almost as good as Bubba'd.

There're still OK.

I didn't think the 48's were such a great deal when they were selling the 24/47 for $200......

A great cheap milsurp.
I am seeing prices going up already since Marstar is almost out (if not already).

I recommend one - lots of fun.

They are OK, but you can't beat a Mauser that hasn't been dicked with. You get what you pay for.

Perhaps I'm confused at your point, or your definition of "dicked with" ..... :D

An "un-dicked with" all correct original and all matching K98k Mauser will cost you at least $1,000 U.S., or more .........

I think the point is value versus cost and to get a Mauser design like the M48 or M48A with accessories for $400-$500, is a pretty good deal. You can get post war K98k re-builds for betweem $300 and $400, but they have had a lot of parts swapping and forced match re-numbering.

Badger, I like that sniper configuration- what type of mount and scope are those?

Actually, I can't take much credit for this project build. I got the idea from claven2, who did one of these ahead of me. Without his encouragement, guidance and assistance, I would have never got this beast started or finished. :D

I got the scope and parts through Kebco LLC, Silver Spring, MD, USA (click here)http://www.kebcollc.com/. Ken was very helpful and using items (rings and scope) bought from him, plus a standard M48A in excellent condition acquired separately, I managed to get my own "kit" project version of this pseudo Yugo sniper completed. Since I have absolutely "zero" mechanical aptitude, on claven2's recommendation, I then had Jason at Gunco in Ottawa do the mounting work. He was excellent and I've had no problems with mount loosening or improper installation issues.

The nice thing about doing a project like this, is the much lower cost to build-up an 8mm Mauser sniper rifle, relative to the huge expense involved with buying or building up the WWII German k98 sniper rifles. It puts ownership of a generally 40's/50's historical period sniper rifle within the financial reach of a lot more shooters.

Marstar offerings, are they really good, and the grading they use, like hand picked, is it worth it. I really like the 48 and 48a they have on their site, your views, but much of it is never in stock. Are all the good ones gone.

Hey thanks,
so the as new, is that unfired, like new , new , I want one but fear a piece of junk may result. Those that have had great results shopping at Marstar, are you all happy with these firearms. Sorry about all the questions, not a seasoned expert in this area of the gun world.
That sure is a cool pic up there Rifle chair, do they sometimes have a bit of fancy grain in the wood, looks like walnut. One final thing, the sniper rifle barrel is it differant than the others.?

I have always gotten great stuff from Marstar. And in the event that you are unhappy with your 48, they have an money back guarantee so you could just send it back.
AFAIK, there is no difference in a barrel from the sniper to a non-sniper Mauser.

Enjoy the mauser!!
