I've been thinking about getting a stag-10 in 308 and building a secondary upper with a short barrel for fun range use maybe in a 10.5 or 12 inch barrel. Has anyone done that here? If so how well did it perform at the range for fun plinking. All I can think of is the fireball must be massive.

I doubt a lot of people have shorties upper for their NR Stag10, which is why people buy them.
That being said, playing with classifications switching from 18.5" to 10" by simply switching the upper places you in the position of owning a non registered restricted firearm. I know some will chime in with actual law text. Not saying I agree with this, but it is something you may want to know about before you do it.

Turning a non restricted stag 10 into a restricted short barreled rifle is one of the most selfish things a gun owner could do to everyother gun owner that has a stag 10 purely for the non restricted status. For the love of god just use an already restricted receiver set
I agree, there have been some decent deals lately on LR308 kit in the EE and a couple dealers and that makes a lot more sense than building a restricted on the stag set.
Most shorties I've seen are in the 16" range but I'm sure there's a way to go shorter.

i'm in the process of doing a 12.5 incher. sourced barrels and buffers, and gas systems, just waiting for the right time to dive into it. keep in mind, if you do this the right way, you will call the cfo when its complete, so you can get it verified and registered as a restricted.
I can't wait to get into mine, it will be fun, and it will keep the range fudds away lol.

and the funny thing is, I've seen DPMS LR308 rifles , with an already restricted lower, sell for 1/2 of what a stag build will run out at LOL

A shorty 308 is a flame thrower, the shorty 50 Cal's it's a fire ball, I'd be impressed to see it tho, but the stag 10 is better as a non restricted
it's not about being cool my friend, it's about playing the game that is afoot smartly.
do we as a community "owe" it to you to accept what some obviously perceive as a bad idea because it may create a slippery slope for the Stag-10 status altogether.
OR do we as a community offer the suggestion and opinion that the platform is NR, let's leave it that way in the FRT tables.

In today's current climate, where the walls are closing around firearms ownership in Canada, is it really the smart thing to do for the community to buck the trend and register a Stag 10 lower as restricted when there are more affordable options?

I started this road quite a while ago. the thing about sbr ar308 platforms, is they are expensive if you don't do it yourself. I would rather buy a upper/lower kit, build my own for less than 2k, truly make it my own, instead of dropping upwards of 3k.
hell, I can build a sbr, and buy an nr stag10, and still be in for less than a nice offering from armalite. its not about being cool, its about being free to do what you want.
it is weird that a guy posts a thread about building one, and suddenly, its a bad idea. he's asking for help, not hinderance.
I think the idea of the rifle you want is fine..... be a fun build to play with for sure.
So if I wanted one, I would buy an LR308 rifle , pull the barrel and handguard and sell them and put the parts I want on the end and I've got the rifle I want, in an already registered restricted receiver.
I've seen LR308 rifles sell here for 1250.00 complete , add a barrel handguard and gas system, selling the ones you don't need and your have your project built with less hassle.
anyways, there's an option for you that doesn't start putting stag 10 receivers into the restricted category, potential buggering things up for everybody who owns one. squeaky wheels get grease right? best not be the squeaky wheel and give the rcmp firearms center reason to apply it
