Anyone consider rebarreling a bolt-action rifle for 7.62x39mm?

I really had no idea where to post this thread -- Hunting & Sporting Arms? ehh...
I figured I'd post it here where all the 7.62x39mm lovers are lurking.

I have a stainless Savage laying around thats kindof redundant (its my 6th .308 :rolleyes:), and just had the idea of rebarreling it to 7.62x39mm.

Any thoughts? Has anyone here done this with a Savage?
What would be the easiest way to do it? Would the .308 bolt face work?
I figure the mag will be the biggest hurdle, but i can either modify it or, worst case, just use it as a single shot which I really dont mind - most of the time i single-feed my bolties anyway.

I Know That Alberta Tactical Rifle has done this before, with a Sako A5. Im not sure what the rifle started life as, but they rebarreld & chambered it for 7.62*39 (using true 308 diameter for large bullet selection) and then throated the gun for use with heavy large bullets.

You may wish to drop them a line, as they are a board memeber

Prosper did a Stevens 200 in x39. Very accurate gun. Not sure if he used a 308 barrel or not, but it does shoot surplus, and his handloads are damned accurate in it too.

it seems a bit... hokey, and i am hesitant to try.

also, isnt the 7.62x39mm bullet diameter slightly larger than .308?

.310"-.311" for milsurp. A bit tight, but millions of rounds of surplus have been put through min-30's, which have a 308 bore. Until you try it, can't say what accuracy would be like.
 
There's a company that will rechamber your old .303 Enfield into 7.62x39, costs like $500.00 though. Even if you will save that money back in cheap surplus, you still have to pay money. The good part about this is that they install a magazine so it's not a single shot conversion.
 
CZ 527 comes in a 7.62x39. I was looking at trying to have a 527 Kevlar with bull barrel in this caliber. Great round for 200 yards.

Damn... I've been looking at those lately. I'd love a quality rifle to shoot my cheap surplus from.

I think it would be much easier to go with a rifle already chambered for 7.62x39. Less cost, less feeding issues, etc.

has anyone actually used a chamber insert adapter? any major cons?
this seems like the simplest method right now - i just order one for $25 and i dont even need a new barrel. its also totally reversible.
 
Simply coat the the outside of the adapter with non permanent Locktite™, place a fired 7.62x39 case inside the chamber and close the bolt. After 10-12 hours, eject the 7.62x39 case and you are ready to start shooting.
