So my friend and I were goose hunting and a flock of about 200 rises out of the cornfield and starts coming right for us... we're talking a sky full of birds... we wait for them to get within range and then I pull the trigger and *bang* then I pull again and nothing... I then remember I have a Rem 870 and need to cycle the shell... of course by this time I only get one more shot in before they are over the trees.

Talk about feeling like a rookie .... ever happen to you?

hahaha that sucks man, I've only been out two times and I did not forget to pump my 870 :p Then again I have shot my 870 a lot in shooting trap and am very familiar with it. It was just second nature for me.

YMMV (and I guess it did vary :p )

hahaha at wheelin. But to answer iceman's question, yes I did manage to knock em down one of my first one was a banded one too :D (didn't realize how rare those are until the people I was with told me)

I know how you feel. On a remote river in BC my brother and I were hunting, moose or goose, with transportation by river boat. We were pulled into shore, biding our time and decided to change shotguns. He used an Ithaca pump and I virtually always used a double barrel sxs, with two triggers.
Shortly, honk, honk, some geese were flying down the river and came right over. I fire once, miss, and can't find the second trigger!
From my brother came a one shot miss. I asked him why he didn't pull the other trigger. He said he was trying to pump in another shell.
We quickly took our own guns back.

I feel your pain. I use a Semi 12 ga for waterfoul and get into semi auto mode very quickly. Alway feeding shells and pulling the trigger, very fast paced action when the birds are comming in. Now thst the season is open, I'm out hunting upland birds and like to carry a short cooey 840 single shot...I keep forgetting to #### the damn hammer. :(

LOl, that's funny. I forgot to reload once. I had only one round in the chamber and when I pumped there was nothing.

I don't have a semi auto shotgun though, so I am in the habit of pumping.

I use an 870 as well, but when I hold the gun, I put a bit of back pressure on the slide...this way when I pull the trigger, the slide comes back and I just push forward and repeat.

Never had that happen but I did hear about a guy deer hunting with his Winchester 94, had a nice size deer walk out in front of him at about 35 yards. He aimed for a broadside lung shot and unloaded his rifle. After the deer ran off and he couldn't figure out why it didn't drop, he looked down at the ground and saw all 5 of his unfired rounds laying by his feet.
