after a hundred or so, the shellplate is full of tiny brass chips. am I over belling the case and it's chipping or what?

Only thing I can think of atm is maybe your indexing is out a hair and it is shaving off the side. (If you are running anything but a single stage.)
Can you see on the case where it is from? maybe paint one with a sharpie black and run it through to check.

I've read that the lee expanders are rough on purpose to grab the brass and jerk the press to help drop all powder.
I'll disassemble it and clean/polish it. I don't need/want to jerk my press and shave brass... will report once I have had time to check that out.

Lee powder thru expanders are made ruff. I immediately remove and polish expander with 320 to 600 emery grits. It's easy with a lathe 3 jaw chuck, harder by hand.
