Anyone else hear about the backlog for reference checks at the CFC?

It's now been 28 days since my license application was received by the CFC; however, they still haven't called my references. On the telephone, a CFC employee told me that there is a backlog in reference checking department. Up until now I've been quite impressed with the CFC, they're always very friendly on the telephone, but it seems to me like a month is ample time to call two people. Have you heard anything about this?

28 days is the waiting period. That is processing paperwork and sending to the RCMP for the background checks. Something should happen in the next 14 days.

I have never had any trouble in the past. I have no criminal record or anything and no complaints from anyone and this time it is taking for ever. I mailed everything in before Christmas, they received it on Jan. 2, 09 and they phoned my references soon after and everything seems fine except I am still waiting to get it. It is now May 5th so maybe by June. Never seen the likes of this before. Could be someone on holidays or missplacing it for awhile. Who knows but I'm still hoping.

I completed my RPAL this weekend. In my class were 6 people doing it for the Customs Agency. The instructor told me that the customs guys are typically taking over half of his classes and that there are some delays with paper work as a result of this. Seems like a large hiring binge going on by customs.

Don't know if they get priority or something with the RCMP

It's a mandatory 28 day waiting period.
You can never get it before 28 days.

You can wait many months. Service delivery standard is 45 days IIRC.

Start calling if you get close to 45 days.
Call once a week till you get it.

Mine sat on a pile "for no reason" and was issued as soon as I called.

Yes they do.

My references and i were called 2 weeks after they received my app, and it was listed as approved on the 29th day. It is during those 28 days they do the reference and background checks.
You got lucky or it was an upgrade from regular pal. They told me that when I took the course and when I called after two weeks and again after three weeks, the cfc told me the same thing: If its a new lic nothing will happen for 28 days. It doesnt mean there arent people who got called sooner but the rules the way they explained it to me is this is the normal process.

Nope.

First PAL/RPAL application.

I think you were being dicked around by someone at the CFC.

I got mine in 43 days.... but Ive heard of people waiting up to almost 9 months... Its a crap shoot really....

How long does stuff take to show up on the website? Does it take awhile for an application to show up on their site? I sent mine in 3 weeks ago and every time I check the website it says there is no information on me. Just knowing if they've recieved my application would be nice.

Just out of curiosity, when did you apply?

It could be a new policy.
did it in january. Most of the people lately have waited 28 days before any action I think cus I was reading closely during my wait time. Someone on here said they sort them by the day they recieve them at the cfo and each day they take the next bunch from 28 days after they got them. I guess it makes sense but it was definately the case for me and some I shoot with and took the course with had the same thing.

They received my application on the 6th of April but it didn't show up on the website till the 21st. I called four times in total and kissed ass every time. The first time they told me they started processing my application on April 21st. The second call was 4 days later and a woman transfered me to do my phone interview. The third call I made was last Tuesday and the woman asked if I would like to speed the process up by having my references phone in. She gave me an extension # that I had my two references phone in on. My status changed on the website on Monday to.

Application Number: **************

Application Received on: 2009/04/06

Current Status: Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued. If you have not received your licence within 2 weeks please contact the Canada Firearms Centre Toll Free number. (1-800 731-4000)

Today I phoned my local CFO office and asked for my RPAL # and applied for my long term ATT at the same time. I bought a membership at a local range last week. Today I purchased a Ruger SR9 9mm at a local shop today using my DL and range membership as ID providing my RPAL #.

I hope this helps as I know the wait sucks!

Cheers
