Anyone else powder coating for their ar15? (powder coating tip as well)

Finally got a chance to get a bunch of powder coating done with a tip I got off YouTube. Use bird screen or mesh to bake your bullets on instead of standing them up one by one. I got all this done in maybe 1 hour (not including baking time). You can see the little pans I made with the mesh in the picture.

Powder coated some 60gr 0.223 bullets to try in my ar15. I made 50 with 22gr of cfe223. Hopefully they will be accurate but more importantly won't foul up the gas tube. If anyone else is doing it what loads are you using?

I've found that in my .30/30 Sharps with a tight chamber, the nose build up from the PC prevents the round from chambering.
I can't get the nose sized properly with my NOE nose resizing die, or with my Eagan nose tapering die.
I'll be deforming the bullet too much, by the time it gets to the point where it can be chambered.
Since the powder thickness is uniform, this will have a bigger impact on small calibre bullets.
I've had no problems in .38/55 and .45/70 and only that one in .30 calibre.
I haven't really tried PC in .222, but I'll make sure things fit properly before making up a large batch of ammo.
 
I bought a Lee universal seating die and Noe Lyman M style flare mandrel for use with the Lee die. I barely flare it to get the bullets in the neck without stripping the powder coating. They seated very easy compared to something bigger like 45acp or 500mag. Hopefully I'll get to the range tomorrow and see how they go.

I don't have gas checks yet, I tried getting some but completely forget.
 
Let us know how it goes, I've been thinking about getting into casting and if I could make cheap plinking boolits that would be awesome.
 
So I got to the range today and shot all the powder coated bullets and another 50 rounds of campro 55gr loaded with 25gr of cfe223. I didn't have any feeding or ejection issues. Accuracy on the other hand wasn't the best, but I only did the 1 charge of 22gr.the other thing I noticed was more smoke (seemed like it was a greenish smoke) when shooting them. I plan to load more and see if I can find an accurate load. I haven't cleaned or looked at the gun to see if there is any build up, but it didn't look any dirtier then normal for a quick look.

When I think of ARs, cast isnt the first thing that comes to mind, but why not.

Will you chrony ? What is your twist rate.
 
So I've cast another 500 62gr bullets but am curious to see what else people are looking to see me "test"? I'll load up 200 rounds and see what load works best with cfe223 but I also have blc-2, h414 and varget. Or is everyone curious to see if it will block up the gas tube?
 
I'm curious if you get:

-Decent accuracy.
-No leading or paint in the gas tube.
-Consistant feeding from the magazine.
-No short stroking of the bolt due to a reduced load.
 
I would like to see cast with gas checks vs without to see difference in accuracy. This is something I was going to try out. Your results may change my mind. Thanks for having your rifle be the guinea pig. ��
 
I have my bullets powder coated but am waiting on gas checks :( I'm also going to sort my cases by head stamp so the case capacity is the same or close to, then work up a load and see if that was one of the reasons why the accuracy un-checked was off.

I have the same problem in both of my model 94s,
if you are willing to modify your mold, one of the guys at castboolits suggested that I tape off and spray my mold cavitys with high temp paint, one light coat of the krylon 1200 degree stuff brought my as cast bullets down exactly .0025 and that size remained consistent over a 300 bullet casting session, I run on the hot side and like frosty bullets, and the member who gave the suggestion has been using this method for some time, claims the paint wears thin and needs to only be reapplied every 3-5k rounds, now my pc brings my bullets nose up to between .3005-.3001, which is just perfect (for me anyways)
